First run in 1981, Wineglass has had time to become part of the city's running calendar. The marathon is a true point-to-point: its finish sits about 19.1 miles from the start as the crow flies. The modeled line carries about 510 feet of total climb and ranges from roughly 928 to 1160 feet above sea level. Look for First Presbyterian Church of Bath, Steuben County Courthouse, Little Joe Tower, Corning Incorporated World Headquarters (One Riverfront Plaza) in the flyover, with recognizable forms modeled from architectural records.

Fly the course

The whole course, built from the best available published route trace and an extruded model of Corning. Scrub it, change the camera, or let it play. Nothing here is a video: it is drawing the city live.

Route statusCurrent community course trace cross-checked against the published route. GET https://ridewithgps.com/routes/52626612.json loads without login: name 'Wineglass Marathon', distance 42204.2 m (26.22 mi), 2815 track points, start 42.3535,-77.2999 (County Route 113, Bath NY) to finish 42.1437,-77.0551 (West Market St, Corning). Created 2025-09-11, matching the 2025 course; the 2026 official site still uses the 2025 course map (WGM_MarathonMap_Full_2025WHITE) with an identical course description, so this matches the current course. Note: the .gpx export URL returns 401 without login; use the .json endpoint for geometry.

The route line uses the best published course trace available. Public-domain USGS and USDA aerial photography plus USGS 3DEP elevation are baked into RunRace USA, so the flyover makes no paid map API or third-party runtime requests. Buildings, roads, parks and water use OpenStreetMap, ODbL. This is photographic terrain with modeled architecture, not photogrammetry. Bridge approaches, elevations and facade details are approximations; the organizer's published route remains the reference.

Race-week weather, measured

At the start line, September 30-October 8 averaged a low of 50°F and a high of 68°F across 2016-2025. The same window reached 84°F at its warmest and 38°F at its coldest. Measurable rain appeared on about 32% of sampled days. Treat the range, not just the average, as the packing list.

Pace it by effort

The profile and grade strip come from the same route currently loaded in the flyover. Use even pace as a baseline, then protect effort on the highlighted climbs and exposed sections.

Common questions

Does it sell out, and is there a lottery?

No lottery is described anywhere on the race site. Registration is first-come on RunSignUp. The rules page references waitlist transfers if the race you want is full, and notes 2026 deferrals as sold out, so capacity limits clearly exist. The site never publishes a field cap or a general waitlist process.

Are there corrals, and are they enforced?

The race site pages we read say nothing about corrals, waves or seeded starts for the marathon, so treat pace-sign self-seeding as the working assumption rather than an enforced corral. What is enforced is arrival: the rules require ALL full and half marathon runners to reach the start by race bus. Miss your bus and there is no other way in.

What is the time limit, and what if I fall behind?

6.5 hours for the marathon (the half gets 7 hours, the 8K 2 hours). There is also an intermediate cutoff: you must reach the midpoint at Campbell-Savona High School by 3:15. Falling behind is not a quiet DNF on a point-to-point course, since the finish is 26 miles from the start.

How do I drop out mid-race?

The FAQ instructs non-medical drops to get to the nearest water or medical aid station, where ham radio operators call a sweep bus that takes you to the Transportation Center. Do not freelance a ride from a spectator: you are in rural Steuben County and the timing system will still show you on course.

Can I give my bib to someone else?

No, and the site is blunt: transferring or selling a bib is not allowed under ANY circumstance, the bib user is disqualified, and the original registrant is permanently banned from future Wineglass events. Bibs must be picked up and verified by the original registrant. Lost bibs are not replaced.

Can I defer or switch races?

Yes, but only through official channels, which contradicts nothing about the bib-transfer ban. Deferral to 2027 runs through RunSignUp for a $60 fee, opening July 15 2026 and closing September 1 2026 or when sold out, one year only. Switching between full and half costs $40 plus any price difference. The 5K is excluded. Entries are otherwise non-refundable.

What are the bag check rules?

Strict and a common first-timer failure. Only the clear plastic gear bag from your Expo swag bag is accepted; gear trucks take no other bags, boxes or luggage, with NO EXCEPTIONS. Write your bib number on it in Sharpie. You also cannot board the start bus with a backpack. Hydration vests are allowed but searchable.

What else catches people out?

Packet pickup is Expo-only, with no race-day bib pickup, so a Sunday-morning arrival does not work. Music devices are strongly discouraged so you can hear vehicles and officials. Strollers are barred from the full and half, dogs from every race, and the minimum age is 18. Pacers exist via marathonpacing.com.

What does early-October weather do here?

The race site pages we read carry no weather guidance or historical conditions, so this is from general knowledge, not the official site: Corning in early October typically starts in the 40s Fahrenheit and warms through the morning, and the 8:15 AM point-to-point start means a long cold wait at Bath with only throwaway layers, since your gear bag leaves on a truck.
