The race-week geography
The mistake here is booking a hotel with a garage and assuming you will drive to it Saturday morning: the start-line grid is barricaded before dawn. On the race's published 2025 closure schedule, Broad Street shut from Belvidere all the way to 11th Street at 4:00 a.m. and did not reopen until 10:00 a.m., and 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Streets between Grace and Marshall shut on the same 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. clock. The finish precinct closes even earlier: 5th Street from Bragg to Tredegar and Tredegar Street from 7th to Brown's Island Way were closed continuously from 5:00 p.m. Thursday until 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Street parking is the other trap. Richmond Police post no-parking signs along the course starting 9:00 p.m. Wednesday and begin towing at 4:00 p.m. Friday, with restrictions running to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, and a tow from a public street carries a $120 city fine (Seiberts Towing, 804-233-5757). So: arrive Friday, put the car in a garage before Friday afternoon, and pick a hotel you can walk out of. The race designates two host hotels, both downtown and both inside the walking radius: the Omni Richmond (100 S 12th St, described by the race as six blocks from the start and six from the finish) and the Delta Richmond Downtown (555 E Canal St, six blocks from the start and two from the finish), bookable through the official block via 288 Travel at 804-505-3005. Race-day garage parking downtown is free, and the race points runners to decks at 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 8th & Marshall and 8th & Grace/Franklin for the start, and the James Center, 3rd/4th/6th/8th & Main, 4th & Cary, 12th & Canal and Virginia & Canal for the finish.
Broad Street start-line block (Convention Center core)
Under 10 minutes
This is the Marriott, Hilton Downtown, Graduate, Moxy, Holiday Inn Express and Massad House cluster, and several of these sit directly on the segment of Broad that closes at 4:00 a.m., so the barricades are outside your door and you walk to the corral in shoes you did not have to think about. The tradeoff is the back half of the day: the finish on 5th north of Tredegar and the Brown's Island party are downhill and roughly a half mile further south, so getting back for a shower means walking back up. Nothing here is open at 5:30 a.m. on a November Saturday, so plan on hotel coffee or a room bagel rather than finding a cafe. Note that Franklin Street from 2nd to 6th and 3rd Street from Main to Broad close at 6:00 a.m. and stay closed until 2:30 p.m., which boxes in some of the side approaches even after the start passes.
Monroe Ward / Grace and Franklin (Linden Row, Quirk, HI Richmond hostel)
Under 5 minutes
The tightest walk to the 7:00 a.m. gun of anything downtown, and the calmest place to be at 6:15 a.m. because you are a block or two off the closed corridor rather than in the middle of it. Linden Row Inn sits on Franklin, which closes 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. between 2nd and 6th, so a car cannot come collect you there mid-morning even after you finish. Treat this zone as a walk-only base for the whole day and it works perfectly. It is also the best pairing with dinner the night before, since the restaurants at the Broad and 1st corner are effectively at the start line.
Shockoe Slip / Canal and Cary (Omni, Delta and neighbors)
Under 15 minutes
The smart pick if you care more about the finish than the start. The Delta is two blocks from the finish by the race's own count and the Omni is six, so you can cross the line, walk to your room, shower, and be back at the Brown's Island party inside half an hour, which is the single thing most Richmond runners wish they had planned for. The start is still a comfortable walk on quiet streets. Canal from 7th to 5th, Byrd from 2nd to 7th and 6th from Cary to Canal all close 4:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., so this pocket is inside the barricades from before dawn until late afternoon: do not count on driving out for lunch.
Manchester / south of the James
Over 20 minutes
Cheaper rooms with a genuinely good approach to the finish, since the race directs people to walk the Tyler Potterfield Pedestrian Bridge from the Manchester side near 10th & Semmes straight into the finish area. It is a poor race-morning base though, because you are adding a real walk or a drive to a 7:00 a.m. start, and the southside course streets (Semmes westbound, 21st, Riverside Drive) close between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. and stay shut until roughly 11:30 a.m., which can trap a car on the wrong side of the river for the middle of the day.

The morning connection
Plan to walk on race morning and treat every wheeled option as a backup. GRTC is zero-fare citywide, which the race itself points out, but on the 2025 marathon Saturday GRTC put more than a dozen routes plus the Pulse on detour starting at 4:00 a.m., with temporary stop closures along the course, and GRTC has not published Saturday first-departure times, so a bus is not a reliable way to make a 7:00 a.m. corral. There is no race-morning shuttle. The free shuttle everyone hears about is the expo shuttle running from the Omni Richmond Hotel to the Richmond Raceway infield on Thursday and Friday only, with the last drop-off 30 minutes before the expo closes (6:30 p.m. Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday). The one shuttle that does run on Saturday runs the wrong direction on purpose: a free shuttle carries finishers and spectators from the Brown's Island post-race party back up to the start-area parking, operating on 7th Street from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you parked near the start, that is your ride back to the car, and it is also the easy way to avoid walking uphill on trashed legs.
Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL. Aerial imagery is from USGS and USDA; other images carry their own source credits. Weather figures use Open-Meteo reanalysis for November 10-18 across 2016-2025 at the start line.
