Where to watch
A course-aware spectator plan for Richmond.
Read the geography first
The course returns toward its starting district. Use the map to choose a fixed anchor and the finish, and never build a plan that requires crossing the live route.
Gold is the selected modeled course; route provenance is stated beside the flyover.

Moving around race morning
Plan to walk on race morning and treat every wheeled option as a backup. GRTC is zero-fare citywide, which the race itself points out, but on the 2025 marathon Saturday GRTC put more than a dozen routes plus the Pulse on detour starting at 4:00 a.m., with temporary stop closures along the course, and GRTC has not published Saturday first-departure times, so a bus is not a reliable way to make a 7:00 a.m. corral. There is no race-morning shuttle. The free shuttle everyone hears about is the expo shuttle running from the Omni Richmond Hotel to the Richmond Raceway infield on Thursday and Friday only, with the last drop-off 30 minutes before the expo closes (6:30 p.m. Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday). The one shuttle that does run on Saturday runs the wrong direction on purpose: a free shuttle carries finishers and spectators from the Brown's Island post-race party back up to the start-area parking, operating on 7th Street from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you parked near the start, that is your ride back to the car, and it is also the easy way to avoid walking uphill on trashed legs.
Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL. Aerial imagery is from USGS and USDA; other images carry their own source credits. Weather figures use Open-Meteo reanalysis for November 10-18 across 2016-2025 at the start line. Schedule, prices and expo hours were checked in August 2026 and are the fields most likely to move: confirm them on www.richmondmarathon.org before you book anything. Spot an error?
