The race-week geography
The mistake here is treating Pittsburgh like a city where you can drive to the start. You cannot: Boulevard of the Allies between Wood and Stanwix closes at noon Friday and stays closed straight through Sunday (CBS Pittsburgh), and the rest of the downtown grid goes down at roughly 1:45 a.m. Sunday, with most streets shut until about 2:30 p.m. and the Boulevard finish line not reopening until roughly 6 to 6:30 p.m. So the walk from your room to the corral is the whole decision. Everything already measured is inside the ring and inside three minutes on foot: Drury Plaza Downtown (2 min), Courtyard Pittsburgh Downtown (2 min), The Westin Convention Center (2 min), Kimpton Hotel Monaco (3 min). Book one of those and the closures stop being your problem. Book outside downtown and you are solving a transit puzzle at 5 a.m.
Downtown / Golden Triangle (the start)
2-4 min to the start
This is the only base that makes the closures irrelevant. Drury Plaza, Courtyard Downtown and the Westin Convention Center are all about two minutes from the start, the Kimpton Monaco about three. At 5:45 a.m. the Triangle is closed to traffic, quiet, and full of runners walking in the street toward the Boulevard, which is the pleasant version of a marathon morning. Plan to arrive Saturday and park the car for the duration: the Boulevard of the Allies between Wood and Stanwix is already closed from noon Friday, so a Sunday-morning drive-in is not happening.
Along the T line (South Hills, Mt. Lebanon, Dormont)
train ride, not a walk
If downtown sells out, the light rail is the backbone that gets you past the closed streets, and PRT keeps regularly scheduled light rail running through race day. Rooms out here have better late availability than the downtown blocks. The catch is the first train: PRT's 2026 marathon page publishes shuttle windows but not first-train times, so confirm the Sunday timetable directly with PRT at 412-442-2000 before you commit to this plan for a corral you cannot miss.
Oakland / Squirrel Hill (east end)
not walkable to the start
Only sensible if you are visiting family or the downtown rate is unbearable. It sits on the wrong side of the course: the race runs through 14 neighborhoods from the West End Bridge out to Homewood, and the Forbes Avenue climb from mile 11.4 to 16.07 (+225 ft) comes right up into Oakland, which means the roads between you and downtown are the ones under the race. PRT runs a free temporary 84M shuttle between Oakland and Squirrel Hill during the morning until about 3:30 p.m., which is useful for spectators and for getting back to a room afterward, but it is not a way to reach a 7 a.m. start.

The morning connection
Two separate problems: getting to the corral, and getting back to your room after 26.2 miles. The car solves neither. Closures run from about 1:45 a.m. Sunday to roughly 2:30 p.m., with most roads targeted to reopen by 3 to 3:30 p.m. and the finish area on the Boulevard of the Allies not until about 6 to 6:30 p.m. P3R posts no-parking signs along every closed street and will tow vehicles left on them, so if your rental is on a street rather than in a garage, move it Saturday. Downtown bus access is heavily restricted on race morning, so light rail plus your feet is the reliable combination. Buy fares in advance or use mobile ticketing; PRT's TrueTime tracking is not reliable for detoured buses and detour notices are not posted at stops.
Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL. Aerial imagery is from USGS and USDA; other images carry their own source credits. Weather figures use Open-Meteo reanalysis for April 28-May 6 across 2016-2025 at the start line. Schedule, prices and expo hours were checked in 2026-08-27 and are the fields most likely to move: confirm them on www.thepittsburghmarathon.com before you book anything. Spot an error?
