Getting In · Abbott World Marathon Major
Chicago Marathon
Twenty-nine turns, almost no elevation, and a city that closes itself down for you. Chicago is where world records go to happen, and it is also the single most gettable star in the Six Star chase.

- The lottery, honestly
Chicago is a loop: out of Grant Park, north through Lincoln Park, back down through the Loop, west, south into Pilsen and Chinatown, and home up Michigan Avenue. It is almost perfectly flat, the aid is excellent, and the crowd support is continuous in a way that surprises first-timers. The last mile includes the only hill on the course, a short ramp up to Roosevelt Road at mile 26, which is a genuinely funny thing to do to people.
It is also the most efficient major. The expo is easy, the city is walkable, hotels are plentiful, and the start and finish are in the same park. For a runner planning their first major, Chicago removes almost every variable except running 26.2 miles fast.
How to get in
- LotteryThe drawing
Applications open in the fall for the following October. Odds are not published but Chicago is consistently the friendliest lottery of the majors, widely treated as somewhere near a coin flip in recent years. You apply, you get charged only if selected.
- Time qualifierTime qualifying
Guaranteed entry for age-graded standards around sub-3:00 for men and sub-3:30 for women in the youngest bands, easing with age. That is meaningfully softer than Boston, and it is a genuine guarantee rather than a right to apply.
- Legacy / loyaltyFive finishes in ten years
Finish Chicago five times in the previous ten years and you get guaranteed entry, permanently, as long as you keep running it. The best loyalty program in the majors.
- CharityPartner charities from about $1,750
Chicago's charity minimums start lower than any other major. If you want a guaranteed bib and can fundraise, this is the cheapest certainty in the series.
- Tour operatorInternational travel partners
Official operators hold packages for overseas runners.
Why it's fast, and how people still blow it
Chicago's elevation profile is essentially a straight line. What actually decides your day is weather and pacing discipline.
- Weather is the wildcard. October in Chicago has produced 30°F starts and 80°F disasters. Have a plan for both, and adjust goal pace on the morning without arguing about it.
- The tall buildings eat GPS. Your watch will read long through the Loop. Run by feel and by the mile markers, not by pace-per-mile panic.
- The crowd funnels are tight early. The first three miles through the canyons are congested. Give away the seconds and get them back later.
- Mile 26 goes up. Short, but it arrives at the worst possible moment. Know it's coming.
The two-year Chicago plan
If you want Chicago specifically, stack the doors instead of picking one.
- Year one: Enter the lottery. Simultaneously, look at the time standards for your age group and decide honestly whether a year of focused training gets you there.
- If the lottery hits: run it, and note that finish number one of five is now on the board toward legacy.
- If it misses: enter again, and pick a spring marathon aimed at the Chicago time standard rather than a Boston standard. The Chicago qualifier is roughly five minutes softer, which for many runners is one training cycle, not three.
- Fallback: a charity place. At the low end of the minimum range, this is genuinely achievable with one good fundraising push.
Questions runners actually ask
What are the Chicago Marathon lottery odds?
Chicago does not publish them, but it is consistently regarded as the most gettable major lottery, commonly discussed as being in the neighborhood of a coin flip. Compare that to London's one to two percent.
Is Chicago a good first marathon?
It is a great first major, and a fine first marathon if you can get in, though the field size and expo scale can be overwhelming. The course itself is about as forgiving as marathons get.
How does legacy entry work?
Finish the Chicago Marathon five times within the previous ten years and you qualify for guaranteed entry. You must apply through the legacy path each year rather than being entered automatically.

If this is your kind of thing
Need the races in between? The hard part of a bucket list year is everything else on the calendar: the qualifier, the tune-up, the long run with a bib on.
