The course crosses the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finishes at the Opera House, which is about as good as marathon scenery gets. It's a genuinely hilly course, more so than most first-timers expect, with rolling terrain through the eastern suburbs and a few climbs that hurt at the wrong moment. Late winter in Sydney means cool mornings and often perfect running weather.
Strategically, Sydney matters because it is the newest major and demand has not yet caught up with prestige. Runners collecting all the stars should be booking the long-haul, currently accessible one now rather than assuming it stays this way. Berlin and Chicago were once considered easy too.

It is hillier than you think
Sydney gets described as scenic, which is true, and then people arrive and discover the elevation profile. There is meaningful climbing in the first half, the Harbour Bridge crossing comes early, and there are pinches late in the race through the eastern side of the city. Treat it as a rolling course, not a flat one, and take five to ten minutes off any PR ambitions.
Making the trip work
For North American and European runners this is the most expensive major to reach, so build the trip properly. Race weekend lands in late August or early September, Australian late winter. Sydney is pleasant then, the Blue Mountains are an hour away, and if you are already flying fourteen hours, adding a week is marginal cost for enormous value.

Is Sydney really the easiest major to get into?
Currently yes. It became the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major in 2025 and demand is still catching up with its new status. Expect that advantage to erode each year.
Is the Sydney course fast?
No. It is genuinely rolling with real climbs, and the Harbour Bridge crossing comes early. Beautiful, but not a PR course.
