Getting In · Abbott World Marathon Major
Boston Marathon
One hundred and thirty years of runners have pointed at the same finish line on Boylston Street. Boston is the only World Marathon Major where the front door is a clock, and the cruelest fact in the sport is that beating the clock still might not be enough.

Boston is the marathon that made the marathon a civilian sport. It has been run every year since 1897 with two interruptions, it goes point to point through eight New England towns on a Monday nobody else has off, and the crowd noise through the Wellesley scream tunnel is a physical object you run into. There is no course quite like it: 400 feet of net drop that shreds your quads in the first ten miles, then the Newton hills arriving at exactly the moment your legs have nothing left to answer with.
But the reason Boston sits at the top of most runners' lists is not the course. It is that the bib means something specific. Everyone on that starting line either ran a time, raised serious money, or was invited. It is the closest thing amateur running has to a credential, which is exactly why the entry process has become the most-argued topic in the sport.
How to get in
- Time qualifierThe BQ, and the cutoff behind it
Standards start at 2:55:00 for men and 3:25:00 for women aged 18 to 34 and ease with age. Here is what runners miss: hitting the standard only earns you the right to apply. More qualifiers apply than the field holds, so the B.A.A. accepts the fastest applicants relative to their standard until the race is full, and a cutoff falls wherever that happens. Recent years have landed roughly five to seven minutes under the standard. Your qualifier must be run on a USATF or World Athletics certified course inside the qualifying window.
- LotteryNew for 2027: a second-chance draw
The B.A.A. added a Boston Qualifier Selection. Applicants who beat their standard but fell outside the cutoff now go into a random draw for approximately 1,000 additional entries. It does not replace the cutoff, and it is not a reason to aim for your standard on the nose, but for the first time in a decade a bare qualifier is no longer automatically dead.
- Time qualifierNew for 2027: the downhill index
Qualifying times from courses with a net drop of 1,500 feet or more now get a time adjustment applied at registration. Boston is explicitly closing the loophole of the steep-downhill qualifier factories. If you were planning a canyon-drop marathon purely to buy minutes, check the course's net elevation before you enter it.
- CharityThe John Hancock Non-Profit Program
Official charity partners get bib waivers. Expect a $7,500 to $12,000 fundraising commitment, with applications opening the fall before race day and closing fast at the popular organizations. It is the most expensive charity door of any major, and it is also the most reliable one.
- Tour operatorInternational travel partners
Official tour operators hold allocations for runners outside the US, bundled with hotels inside the Copley Square blast radius. Expensive, but Boston hotel logistics on Patriots' Day weekend are their own event.
The qualifying standards
| Age on race day | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| 18-34 | 2:55:00 | 3:25:00 |
| 35-39 | 3:00:00 | 3:30:00 |
| 40-44 | 3:05:00 | 3:35:00 |
| 45-49 | 3:15:00 | 3:45:00 |
| 50-54 | 3:20:00 | 3:50:00 |
| 55-59 | 3:30:00 | 4:00:00 |
| 60-64 | 3:50:00 | 4:20:00 |
| 65-69 | 4:05:00 | 4:35:00 |
| 70-74 | 4:20:00 | 4:50:00 |
| 75-79 | 4:35:00 | 5:05:00 |
| 80+ | 4:50:00 | 5:20:00 |
Non-binary standards match the women's times. Age is your age on race day, not on the day you qualified, which quietly hands a lot of runners an extra five minutes. Full standards page and strategy →
Picking a qualifier that actually works
The best qualifying race is boring on purpose. You want three things and nothing else:
- Certified and inside the window. The 2028 qualifying window opened September 19, 2026. Check the race lists its USATF certification code, not just "flat."
- Cool and stable. Late September through early December in the northern US, or a spring race that historically starts below 50°F. Heat costs more minutes than any course feature.
- Flat, but not a canyon. With the new index, a net drop over 1,500 feet is now a liability. Rolling-to-flat river valley courses are the sweet spot.
Grandma's, Indianapolis Monumental, California International, Chicago, Erie, Mohawk Hudson, and Richmond have all built reputations as qualifier machines for exactly these reasons. Search flat fall marathons near you →
The realistic timeline
Assume you are starting from a marathon time roughly fifteen minutes off your standard.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 18 months out | Build volume. Most people miss their BQ on aerobic base, not on speed. |
| 12 months out | Run a tune-up marathon to learn your fueling and your real race pace. |
| 6 months out | Register for the qualifier. Book the flight. Commitment changes training. |
| Sept-Dec | Run the qualifier. If it goes badly, there is another one in three weeks. |
| Following September | Registration week. Submit on day one with your certified result. |
| Early October | Acceptance emails. Cutoff announced. |
| The April after | Hopkinton. |
Mistakes that cost people Boston
- Qualifying by 40 seconds and celebrating. The cutoff is not a rumor. It has been over five minutes in recent years.
- Waiting until the last day of registration week. Registration is not first-come, but paperwork problems are, and a certification issue found on Friday afternoon cannot be fixed.
- Assuming your race was certified. Some popular local marathons are not. Check before you train for it, not after you run it.
- Using your qualifying-day age. Use your age on Boston race day. It is frequently the difference between two standards.
Questions runners actually ask
Does qualifying guarantee me a spot?
No, and this is the single most misunderstood fact in road running. Qualifying earns you the right to submit an application. The B.A.A. accepts the fastest applicants relative to their age-group standard until the field is full, and everyone below that line is rejected. Plan on needing five to seven minutes of buffer.
What is the Boston Qualifier Selection?
New for the 2027 race. Applicants who beat their standard but landed outside the cutoff enter a random draw for roughly 1,000 extra entries. It is a genuine second chance and it is also still a lottery, so it is not a substitute for buffer.
Can I run Boston without qualifying?
Yes, through an official charity partner. Budget a fundraising minimum in the $7,500 to $12,000 range and start applying to charities roughly a year out. International runners can also enter through official travel partners.
When exactly is registration?
Qualifier registration runs for five days in mid-September for the following April's race. For the 2027 race it ran September 14 through 18, 2026. Acceptances go out in early October.

If this is your kind of thing
Need the races in between? The hard part of a bucket list year is everything else on the calendar: the qualifier, the tune-up, the long run with a bib on.
