Where to stay
Nothing is walkable from this start line, so the question is which town to base yourself in.
The race-week geography
The mistake here is assuming a campus start means a campus-adjacent hotel. There is no measured lodging next to the University of Toledo start on West Bancroft, and the race's own booking page does not name a host hotel or a room block at all: it just pushes you into an EventConnect reservation portal. What actually decides where you stay is the free TARTA race-morning bus, which serves four fixed pickup points and nothing else. Book at one of those four addresses and your morning is solved; book anywhere else and you are driving into a street grid that starts closing at 4 a.m.
Downtown Toledo (Summit Street)
not walkable to the start; TARTA pickup at the hotel door
Two of the four TARTA pickup points are here and effectively a block apart: the Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel at 444 N. Summit Street and the Hilton Garden Inn Toledo Downtown at 101 N. Summit Street. This is the default base for out-of-towners because the bus comes to you and you never touch the closure map. Downtown at 5:45 a.m. is quiet and empty in the way a mid-size Midwestern business district is on a Sunday, so plan on the hotel lobby rather than a coffee shop. Return buses drop you back at these same hotels from the UT Transit Center on S. Towerview Blvd.
Secor Road corridor near campus
closest zone to the start; TARTA pickup in front of Fusian, 3504 Secor Road
The TARTA stop at 3504 Secor Road is the one pickup point on the campus side of town, and it is the earliest departure of the four at 4:50 a.m. Staying near Secor puts you closest to the West Bancroft start, but Secor Road itself is inside the closure footprint on Saturday morning for the 5K (Bancroft to West Towerview Blvd, 8:30 to 9:00 a.m.), so time any Saturday driving around that. On Sunday the relevant constraint is Bancroft closing from 4:00 a.m., which means the approach to campus from the east is gone before you would even be awake.
Holland / Toledo Express Airport
not walkable; TARTA pickup at the hotel
The Courtyard by Marriott Toledo Airport Holland at 1435 E. Mall Drive is the fourth TARTA pickup point, which makes it the sensible pick if you are flying in or want to be away from the closure map entirely. It is the longest ride of the four, so treat the 5 a.m. departure window as firm rather than a suggestion. This is a suburban interstate-adjacent base, so at 5:45 a.m. expect a parking lot and a hotel breakfast counter, nothing else.
Hotels, by walk to the start
Distances are measured from the modeled course endpoints.
No walkable hotel inventory was found around the course endpoints.

The morning connection
Two things govern race morning: Bancroft closes at 4:00 a.m. on Sunday between Secor and University Hills, and regular TARTA fixed-route and TARPS service does not start until 6:30 a.m. on Sundays. That combination means public transit is useless for getting to a start line, and the only workable options are the free race-day TARTA buses from the four hotel pickup points or driving yourself onto campus very early. Also note the eastbound Bancroft closure between Secor and Westwood runs continuously from 5:00 a.m. Saturday until 1:00 p.m. Sunday, so that corridor is gone for the whole weekend, not just race morning.
Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL. Aerial imagery is from USGS and USDA; other images carry their own source credits. Weather figures use Open-Meteo reanalysis for April 21-29 across 2016-2025 at the start line.
