Where to watch

The course crosses itself downtown and doubles back on the west side, which means you can see one runner four times on foot.

The geography that makes this easy

Two features of this course do all the work. Public Square is on the route twice, at mile 0.8 heading east and again near mile 12.3 turning north onto Ontario, about one hour and forty-five minutes later for a four-hour runner. And everything from mile 16 to mile 23 is an out and back along the same lakefront road, so a single spot in Edgewater or Lakewood gives you two passes without moving.

Three plans that work

The four-look downtown plan

No car, staying downtown, want to see your runner as often as possible without ever getting on a bus.

A four-hour runner reaches these at roughly 0:07, 0:43, 1:53 and the finish.

  1. Mile 0.8Public Square

Walk from any downtown hotel. Be there by 6:50.

  2. Mile 4.7Erieside, between the Rock Hall and the stadium

Nine minutes on foot north from the square. You have about twenty-five minutes after they pass Public Square.

  3. Mile 12.3Public Square again, Ontario Street side

Walk back. They turn north on Ontario through the square, about an hour after you saw them at the lake.

  4. Mile 26.2St. Clair between West 3rd and West 9th

Three blocks. Get there early: the chute crowd is deep from 9 a.m. on.

The Tremont and Ohio City plan

One car, one parking spot, and a taste for the best two neighbourhoods on the route.

Two sightings inside forty minutes, and the best food and coffee within a block of both.

  1. Mile 7.0Scranton at Train Avenue

Park in Tremont and walk down. This is the hill, and it is where you learn something about your runner.

  2. Mile 10.1Professor Avenue, Tremont

Twelve minutes on foot from the hill. Brick storefronts, and the crowd is three deep.

  3. Mile 11.4Lorain at West 20th, east of the West Side Market

Fifteen minutes on foot north. The market is a short walk west after your runner passes.

The west side plan

You want the late miles, where the race is actually decided and almost nobody is watching.

One Edgewater spot gives you two passes near miles 17 and 22.7. Adding the Lakewood turnaround requires a car or bike.

  1. Mile 17.0Edgewater Park, at the top of the bluff

Park in the upper lot early. Best view on the course and the runners come through twice, at 17 and again near 22.7.

  2. Mile 19.5Lake Avenue at the Lakewood U-turn

Drive or ride west. Everyone in the field passes you twice within a few minutes, going opposite directions.

  3. Mile 25.3Detroit at West 25th, St. Malachi

Back east ahead of them. Then walk into downtown for the finish if the timing works.

Every official cheer zone

Published by the race for the 2026 weekend. Mile markers are the race's own, which run within a tenth of a mile of where our course line puts the same corner. The 2027 list will not be identical, but the anchors, St. Ed's on Scranton Hill, Lincoln Park in Tremont, Tri CLE at the Lakewood turn and St. Malachi at mile 25.3, come back every year.
