A weekend rhythm that protects race day

  1. Arrival. Base your first walk on the real start and finish geometry, then inspect the final approach in the route map.
  2. Packet pickup. Go to Festival Pavilion, Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture (Pier 3) inside its published window; save the final hours offline.
  3. The day before. Choose one course landmark, keep the outing short, and finish your feet-up time early.
  4. Race day. Follow the transportation plan, not ordinary weekend traffic directions.
  5. After the finish. Let the finish-area access plan decide the meal and meetup, especially on a point-to-point course.

Where the weekend should be based

The instinct is to book Union Square because that is where the hotel inventory sits, then assume you will drive or ride to the start. Both halves fail here. Start and finish share one stretch of waterfront near The Embarcadero at Mission/Howard and Folsom, and The Embarcadero is closed in both directions long before you wake: SFMTA says street closures begin Saturday at 9:00 p.m., while the race's own traffic advisory lists The Embarcadero closed 12:01 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., northbound Embarcadero/King from 3rd to Broadway and southbound from Broadway to Harrison. A car cannot deliver you to the start line, and depending on which side of the barricades your hotel's driveway sits on, a car may not be able to reach your hotel either on Sunday morning. So the real lodging decision is not price or view, it is whether you can walk out the door and be in your corral in under ten minutes without crossing a closed road. The four hotels already measured all clear that bar. Everything else is a compromise you should make deliberately.

Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL.
