Where to stay

41 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the finish.

The race-week geography

The mistake here is booking near the start. This is a point-to-point race: it starts up at Sixth Avenue and Quince Street on the Balboa Park side and finishes downtown, so the room you actually want is a short limping distance from the FINISH, not the gun. You only touch the start once, for about twenty minutes, and it is roughly a mile and a half from downtown, which is a walk or a short trolley hop at 5:15 a.m. The finish, by contrast, is where you will be cold, salt-crusted and disinclined to solve a transport problem. Second mistake: assuming a car helps. Most closures and detours run 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday (official traffic page), the route is a soft closure from 5:30 with the start at 6:15, and Sixth Avenue between Kalmia and Redwood and Redwood to University shuts as early as 2 a.m. (news reporting on the 2026 closures). A car parked on the wrong block Saturday night is a car you do not see again on Sunday, and a car parked in a garage inside the loop is a car you cannot drive out until mid-afternoon.

Downtown core / Gaslamp and Marina

walk to the finish; roughly 1.4 miles from the start via Fifth Avenue Station

This is the default and it is the right default. You finish downtown, walk to your room, and never negotiate a closed street. The 77 hotels in the metro cluster heavily here and in Balboa Park, and the race's own expo sits at Waterfront Park downtown (MTS transit guide), which tells you where the weekend's center of gravity is. At 5:45 a.m. the Gaslamp is quiet in the good way: bar debris on the sidewalks, a few open coffee counters, and a steady trickle of bibbed runners walking north. Getting to the start is a 25 to 30 minute walk uphill on Fifth or Sixth, or the Blue Line to Fifth Avenue Station and walk from there.

Little Italy / County Center

about 1.6 miles from the start per MTS; short walk or one trolley stop from the finish area

Quieter and better for food than the Gaslamp, and it is the station MTS names for both the expo at Waterfront Park and the start-line approach (County Center/Little Italy, 1.6 miles from the start). India Street at 5:45 a.m. is empty and pleasantly walkable, with the earliest cafes just opening. The trade-off versus the Gaslamp is a slightly longer post-race shuffle depending on exactly where the finish chute lets out.

Balboa Park / Bankers Hill / Hillcrest (start-side)

walking distance to the start at Sixth and Quince

Tempting, and wrong for most people. You wake up, walk ten minutes, and then finish 26.2 miles away downtown with no easy way back to a room sitting behind closed streets. Sixth Avenue right by these hotels is barricaded from as early as 2 a.m. (2026 closure reporting), so a car is useless and even a rideshare pickup near the corridor is awkward. Only pick this side if you have a non-running partner who will meet you downtown, or if you are content to take the trolley back uphill on tired legs.

The morning connection

Transit works for this race, which is unusual for a 6:15 a.m. start. MTS runs deliberately early service on race Sunday: the UC San Diego Blue Line from San Ysidro starts at 4:34 a.m. and reaches Fifth Avenue Station, 1.4 miles from the start; the Green Line leaves El Cajon as early as 4:59 a.m. for County Center/Little Italy, 1.6 miles from the start; the Orange Line begins at 5:15 a.m. but has a weekend service closure between Lemon Grove and Euclid Avenue, and MTS itself recommends the Green Line instead (MTS transit guide). Note that no trolley station puts you at the start line: every option ends with a mile-plus walk, which is fine as a warm-up but must be in your timeline. Fares are standard adult $2.50 one-way on a PRONTO card, loadable at ticket machines with cash or card, or through the app. Bus and trolley routes themselves detour on race day (official traffic page), so confirm your specific line the night before rather than trusting a stored route.
