First run in 1998, Rock 'n' Roll San Diego has had time to become part of the city's running calendar. The marathon is a true point-to-point: its finish sits about 1.2 miles from the start as the crow flies. The modeled line carries about 1166 feet of total climb and ranges from roughly 7 to 404 feet above sea level. Look for California Tower (Balboa Park / Museum of Us), San Diego Central Courthouse in the flyover, with recognizable forms modeled from architectural records.

Fly the course

The whole course, built from the best available published route trace and an extruded model of San Diego. Scrub it, change the camera, or let it play. Nothing here is a video: it is drawing the city live.

Route statusOrganizer-linked course file. Google My Maps 'Rock n Roll San Diego 2026-community' embedded on the official runrocknroll.com/events/san-diego/traffic-impact page. KML placemark 'San Diego RnR 2025 Marathon- Colleen Version 2/17 with DT Edits' measures 26.66 mi (421 pts), start 32.7367,-117.1593 (Sixth & Quince), end 32.7199,-117.1657 (Ash & Union) — the organizer's own course line, reused unchanged for 2026.

The route line uses the best published course trace available. Public-domain USGS and USDA aerial photography plus USGS 3DEP elevation are baked into RunRace USA, so the flyover makes no paid map API or third-party runtime requests. Buildings, roads, parks and water use OpenStreetMap, ODbL. This is photographic terrain with modeled architecture, not photogrammetry. Bridge approaches, elevations and facade details are approximations; the organizer's published route remains the reference.

Race-week weather, measured

At the start line, June 2-10 averaged a low of 60°F and a high of 70°F across 2016-2025. The same window reached 89°F at its warmest and 56°F at its coldest. Measurable rain appeared on about 2% of sampled days. Treat the range, not just the average, as the packing list.

Pace it by effort

The profile and grade strip come from the same route currently loaded in the flyover. Use even pace as a baseline, then protect effort on the highlighted climbs and exposed sections.

Common questions

How does entry work, and does it sell out?

Entry is straightforward online registration on runrocknroll.com; there is no lottery or qualifying standard. The official FAQ is blunt that entry fees are "non-refundable and non-transferable. No exceptions." Whether the marathon actually sells out is not stated on the race's own pages, so budget for a price that climbs rather than a closed door.

Are corrals real, or just a suggestion?

Both, depending on direction. Corrals come from the estimated finish time you type at registration. The race says faster runners must request a corral change at the Expo, while slower runners can simply line up in a later corral on race morning with no paperwork. Moving up is controlled; moving back is self-service.

Why does the marathon cap you at corral 15?

Because the field is shared with the half. The race states marathon participants "must start in the first 15 corrals to ensure they remain within the course time limit." If you seeded yourself with a slow estimate, you can be sitting in a corral that mathematically cannot make the cutoff. Fix the estimate at registration, not race morning.

What is the time limit, and what happens if you fall behind?

Seven hours for the marathon (four for the half, one for the 5K). There is one hard cutoff, at Mile 8.3, University Ave and Grim Ave, at 9:05 AM. Miss it and you are diverted onto the half marathon course, losing 13.1 miles, and you are recorded as a DNF. Early race, early guillotine.

Does bag check work the way you expect?

No. Drop-off and pick-up are in different places. You drop inside Balboa Park on Balboa Drive near the Laurel St / El Prado corrals, open 5:00 AM to 6:30 AM only, and you collect at N Harbor Drive and Ash St at Waterfront Park until 3:00 PM. Gear check is half and marathon only, not the 5K.

Can you transfer or sell your bib if you get injured?

No, and trying is actively penalized. Entries cannot be transferred to another person or rolled to a future event, and the FAQ warns that attempting to sell your race number "may result in being banned from future events." Deferral is not addressed anywhere in the official FAQ, so assume the entry is a sunk cost.

What does the weather actually do on this date?

From general knowledge, not the race's own pages: early-June San Diego mornings are usually in the high 50s to low 60s under "June Gloom" marine layer cloud. That is excellent early. The catch is that the marine layer often burns off mid-morning, so seven-hour finishers face exposed sun and heat in the back half.

What else catches first-timers out?

Two things. Packet pickup at the Health and Fitness Expo is effectively mandatory, with no race-day option mentioned, so you must arrive a day early. And the course bans support gear outright: "No bikes, rollerblades, strollers, skateboards, or dogs will be allowed on any part of the course." Your bag also arrives at the Expo, not the start line.
