Where to stay
30 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the start.
The race-week geography
The mistake here is treating a downtown Portland hotel as a car decision. It is not: the start and finish share one address, 1000 SW Naito Parkway at Salmon Street in Waterfront Park, and the streets that feed it are shut in a tight box on race morning. Salmon Street between Naito and 1st closes from 8:00 a.m. the day before for build-out, Naito itself is entirely inaccessible from SW Barbur to NW Davis from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m., and cross-traffic on SW 1st between Clay and Arthur is stopped 7:10 to 10:00 a.m. Every hotel on the measured list sits inside or on the lip of that box, which is the point: on foot you are two to four minutes from the corral, and by car you are trapped. Book one of them, park the car Saturday afternoon before the 2:00 p.m. No Parking posting takes effect on route streets, and do not plan to move it until early afternoon Sunday. If you must drive in Sunday morning, the race's own advice is to allow at least 45 minutes to park and walk, and to be dropped off well away from the start rather than at it.
Waterfront edge: Salmon and Naito blocks
2 minutes to the start chute
The AC Hotel Portland Downtown and The Duniway sit essentially on top of the assembly area, which is staged along SW Salmon Street with the marathon and 10K corrals between SW 2nd and Naito and the half between SW 4th and SW 2nd. Staging opens at 5:00 a.m. and the race wants you there by 6:30 a.m. with any gear bag already handed off, so a two-minute walk means you leave your room somewhere around 6:15 rather than 5:15. At 5:45 a.m. these blocks are the loudest part of a quiet city: barricades already in place, sound system testing, portable toilets lined up, but the surrounding office core is dead, so plan on hotel coffee rather than finding an open cafe. The trade-off is the return trip, which is the real prize: you finish in Waterfront Park and walk back through the finish festival to your own shower without touching a curb that is still closed.
Broadway and Pioneer Square blocks
3 to 4 minutes
The Nines, the Hilton, The Heathman and the Porter sit a few blocks uphill from the water around Broadway and the transit mall. The walk down to Salmon and Naito is short, flat and entirely inside the closure zone, so nothing on the course can cut you off going to the start. Coming back is the same in reverse, with one wrinkle worth knowing: you cannot cross Broadway east or west north of Alder until 8:00 a.m., and you cannot cross SW 4th north of Salmon until 7:45 a.m., so anyone in your party heading out after the gun should walk south and east rather than north. At 5:45 a.m. this is a hotel-lobby district rather than a street-life one, well lit and busy with staff and other runners, and the ground floors of these buildings are where the crowd assembles before drifting downhill together.
Anywhere you would need a car on Sunday morning
n/a
Staying outside the core and driving in is the option that fails. Race-route streets are posted No Parking from 2:00 p.m. Saturday to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, and if your street is a one-way that intersects the route you cannot park within a block of the course either. Enforcement is a courtesy tow to the nearest unposted street rather than an impound, but you still lose an hour finding the car; the number to call is 503-823-0044. Add in the Burnside Bridge, which drops to one lane each way with westbound delays from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. and a full closure 7:10 to 7:30 a.m., and the Hawthorne Bridge westbound exit to SW Main closed 7:10 to 7:25 a.m., and a car arriving from the east side at 6:40 a.m. is a coin flip. Garages nearest the start also fill first and empty slowly after the finish.

The morning connection
The race asks runners to use MAX light rail, the Portland Streetcar or Biketown instead of driving, and on a Sunday MAX is early enough to make that real: at Pioneer Square, Sunday trains begin around 3:22 a.m. and run at roughly 30-minute headways through 4:01, 4:33, 5:01, 5:30, 6:00 and 6:30 a.m., so a 6:00 a.m. train still lands you well inside the 6:30 arrival deadline. The four stops below are all a short flat walk from the Salmon Street corrals, and all four sit inside the same downtown grid that closes to cars, which is exactly why they work when driving does not. Buses are the softer part of the plan: in past years TriMet detoured most downtown lines through the race window and left MAX largely intact, but I could not verify a 2026 alert, so check trimet.org for detours the week of the race rather than trusting a stop you used on a previous visit. The single most useful habit on race morning is to approach the start from the south or west and to expect that anyone crossing north through Broadway or SW 4th is blocked until 7:45 to 8:00 a.m.
