The route is a loop, keeping the start and finish in the same part of the city. The modeled line carries about 1279 feet of total climb and ranges from roughly 17 to 177 feet above sea level. Look for Wells Fargo Center, Portland Building (with Portlandia statue), U.S. Bancorp Tower (Big Pink), Park Avenue West Tower in the flyover, with recognizable forms modeled from architectural records.

Fly the course

The whole course, built from the best available published route trace and an extruded model of Portland. Scrub it, change the camera, or let it play. Nothing here is a video: it is drawing the city live.

Route statusCurrent community course trace cross-checked against the published route. '2026 Portland Marathon', 26.24 mi, 413 track points, created 2026-08-21. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/56781923.json loads without login; start/end coordinates identical to the official fetch_mapp Marathon path and every official waypoint lies within 0.1 m of this track — it is effectively an export of the official 2026 course.

The route line uses the best published course trace available. Public-domain USGS and USDA aerial photography plus USGS 3DEP elevation are baked into RunRace USA, so the flyover makes no paid map API or third-party runtime requests. Buildings, roads, parks and water use OpenStreetMap, ODbL. This is photographic terrain with modeled architecture, not photogrammetry. Bridge approaches, elevations and facade details are approximations; the organizer's published route remains the reference.

Race-week weather, measured

At the start line, September 30-October 8 averaged a low of 50°F and a high of 67°F across 2016-2025. The same window reached 85°F at its warmest and 36°F at its coldest. Measurable rain appeared on about 28% of sampled days. Treat the range, not just the average, as the packing list.

Pace it by effort

The profile and grade strip come from the same route currently loaded in the flyover. Use even pace as a baseline, then protect effort on the highlighted climbs and exposed sections.

Common questions

How does entry work, and does Portland Marathon sell out?

Entry is a straightforward online registration at portlandmarathon.com/register for the October 4, 2026 race; the page lists Pricing and a Registration Form but states no participant cap, waitlist, or sell-out date. Nothing on the site we read promises entry will stay open, so treat late September as the practical planning edge because transfers and deferrals both close September 27, 2026.

Are there corrals or waves, and are they enforced?

No. The race does not assign corrals or waves. Large markers denoting various paces line the start chute and runners are directed to queue in the zone marking their expected pace, so placement is self-selected and honor-system. First-timers who seed themselves optimistically spend the first miles weaving. Half marathon starts at 7:00 AM; marathon and 10K start together at 7:15 AM.

What is the course time limit, and does the site contradict itself?

The marathon limit is a 15:00 per mile pace, which the race states equals 6 hours and 33 minutes. The site's half marathon information also reads 6 hours 33 minutes but cites a 30:00 per mile pace, which are inconsistent readings of the same limit. The 10K must be completed within 1 hour 33 minutes.

What actually happens if I fall behind the cutoff?

The site publishes the 15:00 per mile marathon standard and the 6:33 finish limit but does not say on the pages we read what happens to runners behind it, whether sweep vehicles operate, or where intermediate cutoffs sit. Assume streets reopen behind you on a 15:00 pace and plan your slowest miles accordingly rather than counting on a documented grace period.

How does bag check work and when is the real deadline?

Drop bags are handed out at packet pickup, not race morning, and they use a tear-tag loop from your bib for identification, so you must have your bib in hand before you can check anything. Bags must be submitted by 6:30 AM on race morning, which is 45 minutes before the 7:15 AM marathon start and 30 minutes before the half.

Can I transfer my bib to another person?

Yes. Transferring your entry to another person is allowed through September 27, 2026 for a transfer fee that escalates: $5 by April 29, $10 by July 22, $15 by September 2, and $20 by September 27. You can also switch distances if space exists by paying the price difference plus the fee. You collect the money from the recipient yourself.

Can I defer to next year instead?

Yes, deferral is open through September 27, 2026 on an escalating fee schedule of $5 by April 29, $10 by July 22, $15 by September 2, and $35 by September 27. Your credit equals what you paid minus the deferment fee, expires within two years, and can be applied to next year's Portland Marathon or partner events in Salt Lake City, Southern California, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Mesa through April 2027.

What does the weather actually do on race day?

The race publishes historical race-day averages of a low of 50 and a high of 67 degrees, with roughly a 25% historical chance of precipitation. That combination means a genuinely cold 7:00 AM start chute and a warm second half, and a one-in-four chance of Portland rain. Throwaway layers you can shed before the gun are the standard answer, since bags close at 6:30 AM.

Is the course as flat as people say?

Yes, by marathon standards. The start and finish at Waterfront Park sit only 36 feet above sea level and the maximum course elevation is just 178 feet, so the total range is under 150 feet. First-timers expecting the old Portland Marathon's St. Johns Bridge climb should not plan for it; this is a fast profile and pacing should reflect that.

What are the small rules that catch first-timers out?

A photo ID is required to pick up your race packet, and a proxy needs both an ID and a written authorization note, so no one collects your bib casually. Earphones are allowed but the race recommends low volume or a single earbud. Strollers are permitted but are directed to line up at the back of the start.

Where is the aid and how often does it come?

Marathon aid stations appear every two miles from mile 3 through mile 15, then every single mile from mile 16 to mile 26, so support tightens exactly where late-race trouble starts. The half marathon has a station every mile beginning at mile 2.5. All stations carry water, electrolyte drink, gels, and medical support.

Where does the race start and finish?

Both the marathon and half marathon start and finish at Portland's Waterfront Park at 1000 SW Naito Parkway, at the intersection with Salmon Street. Because the start and finish share the same park, gear-check logistics are simple, but the 6:30 AM bag deadline still applies. Marathon and 10K runners share the 7:15 AM start; the half goes 15 minutes earlier.

Ready to commit? Registration is open on the race's own site. As of 2026-08-26 the marathon was $159-$189, and the price only moves one direction.
