Sleep where race morning works
Where to stay
10 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the finish.
The race-week geography
The mistake is booking for the start. There is no start-side lodging decision to make: essentially nobody stays on Staten Island, and every runner leaves Manhattan by ferry or official bus anyway, so the start is a transit problem, not a hotel problem. Book for the finish and for the walk home, because after 26.2 miles you exit Central Park at West 77th Street, roughly a half mile to a mile past the line, and the last thing you want is a subway transfer. The second-order question is whether your hotel sits on the right side of the closures: Central Park West between Columbus Circle and West 76th Street is shut, and the family reunion zone swallows West 61st through West 74th between Central Park West and Broadway/Columbus Avenue, so a room inside that box means you are walking, not riding, in both directions on Sunday.
Upper West Side, roughly 70th to 86th
2 to 20 minutes to the finish; 0 subway rides after the race
This is the default correct answer for a runner rather than a tourist. The finish is on West Drive at West 67th Street beside Tavern on the Green, and the runner exit dumps you onto Central Park West at 77th, so hotels in the 70s put you on jelly legs at your own door without touching a train. It is residential and quiet, tree-lined brownstone blocks rather than Times Square noise, which matters more the night before than people expect. The 1 train at 72nd, 79th and 86th runs straight down to South Ferry in about 30 minutes for the ferry, and the Midtown bus loading point is 20 to 25 minutes away. For the night before, Bella Luna on the Upper West Side is the pick: a neighborhood Italian room of nearly forty years, steps from the park, built on exactly the food you want and close enough that dinner does not become an outing.
Columbus Circle and Central Park South
8 to 9 minutes to the finish
The already-measured cluster lives here: JW Marriott Essex House, Mandarin Oriental, The Phillips Club, The Empire Hotel, La Quinta and the West Side YMCA. Its real advantage is directional: you are south of the finish, near the 59th Street-Columbus Circle station, and roughly equidistant between the park and the Midtown bus pickup at 42nd and 5th. The catch is that this is the tightest closure knot in Manhattan on race day, with West 59th shut between 5th Avenue and Columbus Circle, plus Columbus Circle itself and Grand Army Plaza closed. Central Park South rooms are also the best spectator perch on the course, since the last mile runs right past them.
Midtown around Bryant Park and the New York Public Library
Not walkable to the finish; 0 minutes to the Manhattan bus
This only makes sense if you are taking the official Manhattan bus, which loads at the New York Public Library at 42nd Street and 5th Avenue. Staying within a few blocks removes the single most fragile part of race morning: getting across a closing city to a fixed departure window in the dark. Midtown East gives you Grand Central and generally better value; Midtown West gives you Times Square, Hell's Kitchen and more noise. The trade is entirely at the other end of the day, when you finish at 67th Street and have to get home through closed streets and a crowded 59th Street station.
Financial District and the Battery
Not walkable to the finish; a few blocks to the ferry
The purist ferry play. Whitehall Terminal is a short walk, so you can wake later than anyone else and stroll to the boat instead of navigating a subway at 5am. That is a genuine advantage if you are in a later wave, which is exactly who NYRR steers onto the ferry: their guidance is that runners expecting four hours or more should take it. The cost is the return trip, when you finish 70-odd blocks north and ride home in a poncho.

The morning connection
Everything on race morning is a queue with a clock attached. For 2026, NYRR changed the model: you pick your mode of transportation (Staten Island Ferry, New York Public Library bus, or New Jersey Meadowlands bus) and NYRR assigns your departure time based on your registered or best pace, rather than you choosing the time yourself. Selections opened on August 25 and can be changed through September 8 at 11:59pm ET, after which you are living with what you picked. Both ends of the day are longer than they look: budget 60 to 90 minutes from joining the queue to clearing security at Fort Wadsworth, and 20 to 30 minutes of walking after you cross the line before you are out of the park.
Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL. Aerial imagery is from USGS and USDA; other images carry their own source credits. Weather figures use Open-Meteo reanalysis for October 28-November 5 across 2016-2025 at the start line. Schedule, prices and expo hours were checked in 2026-08-26 and are the fields most likely to move: confirm them on www.nyrr.org/tcsnycmarathon before you book anything. Spot an error?
