MCM
Sunday, October 25, 2026 · 7:20 a.m. EDT for runners (Wheels 7:15 a.m., Duos 7:17 a.m.)
Route 110 in Arlington, between the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery; Runners Village staging is in the North Pentagon parking lot
The race in 60 seconds
First run in 1976, MCM has had time to become part of the city's running calendar. The route forms an open loop, finishing in the same part of the city without returning to the exact start point. The modeled line carries about 1182 feet of total climb and ranges from roughly -5 to 234 feet above sea level. The elevation profile calls out the Key Bridge so the defining work is visible before race morning. Look for Central Place Tower, 1812 North Moore (Rosslyn), Watergate Complex, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in the flyover, with recognizable forms modeled from architectural records.
Fly the course
The whole course, built from the best available published route trace and an extruded model of Arlington. Scrub it, change the camera, or let it play. Nothing here is a video: it is drawing the city live.
Route statusCurrent community course trace cross-checked against the published route. matches the current course; official USMC ArcGIS geometry cross-checked
The route line uses the best published course trace available. Public-domain USGS and USDA aerial photography plus USGS 3DEP elevation are baked into RunRace USA, so the flyover makes no paid map API or third-party runtime requests. Buildings, roads, parks and water use OpenStreetMap, ODbL. This is photographic terrain with modeled architecture, not photogrammetry. Bridge approaches, elevations and facade details are approximations; the organizer's published route remains the reference.
The elevation profile
This Marathon profile covers 26.2 miles, ranges from roughly -5 to 234 feet, and contains about 1182 feet of modeled climb.
- , mile 0.0 to 2.75: 156 feet up, 1.0% average.
- the Key Bridge, mile 4.4 to 4.89: 45 feet up, 1.7% average.
The route at a glance
Gold is the selected modeled course; route provenance is stated beside the flyover.
Race-week weather, measured
At the start line, October 21-29 averaged a low of 48°F and a high of 66°F across 2016-2025. The same window reached 81°F at its warmest and 35°F at its coldest. Measurable rain appeared on about 23% of sampled days. Treat the range, not just the average, as the packing list.
Pace it by effort
The profile and grade strip come from the same route currently loaded in the flyover. Use even pace as a baseline, then protect effort on the highlighted climbs and exposed sections.

Common questions
Is there a lottery for the Marine Corps Marathon?
No lottery appears in the 2026 plan. MCM has used a lottery in the past (the site's own history notes a lottery was reinstated after the 38th MCM sold out in 2 hours and 27 minutes in 2013), but the published 2026 registration plan is a staged first-come sequence: prior-year 50th MCM participants, active duty and Runners Club members starting October 28, then challenge and Distinguished Participant bundles, a deferral window in February, a second Runners Club window February 9-15, and general registration on April 6, 2026 at 10 a.m. EST at $240. First-come means it can sell out, so treat the opening date as the deadline.
What guaranteed ways in exist if general registration closes?
Three, and they all have their own calendars. Charity partners hold guaranteed bibs in exchange for fundraising, with a July 31 deadline for 2026. The MCM Runners Club, open to anyone who has finished five Marine Corps Marathons, gets a guaranteed annual registration window that typically opens in December and closes in February. The Seeded Runner program, which requires submitting a certified marathon result from within three years of race day, was closed for 2026. A virtual finish does not count toward Runners Club eligibility in 2026.
Can I defer or sell my bib if I get hurt?
No. MCMO states plainly that it permits no transfers and no deferrals for 2026 events, and that all registrations are final. The only protection is optional Refund Protect through TEAK, which must be purchased during registration or added inside your participant account within five days of confirmation. Buy it at signup or you have no recourse; a bib sold or handed to someone else is not a legitimate entry.
Are there start corrals, and are they enforced?
There is no enforced corral system. Runners self-seed behind projected-finish-time signs in the staging area off the North Pentagon parking lot, and nobody checks. Practically, that means the first two to three miles through Rosslyn are congested, and you will spend energy weaving if you line up behind people slower than your goal pace. Arrive early enough to place yourself honestly. The only true wave separation is Wheels at 7:15 a.m. and Duos at 7:17 a.m. ahead of the 7:20 a.m. mass start.
What is 'Beat the Bridge' and what happens if I miss it?
It is the mile-20 checkpoint at 14th and D Streets, before the 14th Street Bridge, and every participant must be through it by 1:15 p.m. Miss it and you are pulled off the certified course. You may keep moving, but you will not have run 26.2 miles and you will not be recorded as an official finisher. From a 7:20 a.m. start that is 5 hours 55 minutes to cover roughly 20 miles.
Beat the Bridge is not the only cutoff, right?
Correct, and this is the single thing first-timers underestimate. There are three gauntlets. The DC Gauntlet closes at 12:33 p.m.; miss it and you are diverted at Independence Avenue onto 14th Street. Beat the Bridge closes at 1:15 p.m. at mile 20. The Crystal City Gauntlet closes at 1:49 p.m.; miss it and you are diverted where 12th South becomes Crystal Drive. Anyone diverted at any of the three loses official finisher status, not just the bridge.
What pace do I actually need to hold?
MCM's stated requirement for the marathon is 14 minutes per mile, plus making the gauntlets. That works out to roughly 6 hours 7 minutes for the full distance, but the gauntlet clocks are the real constraint because they are fixed times of day, not elapsed times. If you start well back in the pack and cross the mat several minutes after the gun, your gun-to-gauntlet window is shorter than the person on the front line. Build in a cushion rather than planning to arrive at 14:00 pace exactly.
Does MCM publish an overall course close time?
Not on its own site, which is a gap worth knowing about. The official pages give the 14-minute-per-mile requirement and the three gauntlet times and stop there. A widely circulated third-party guide lists a 3:05 p.m. course close, but that number does not appear on marinemarathon.com. Plan around the gauntlets, which are official, rather than around any course-close figure you see quoted elsewhere.
How does bag check work, and what bag can I use?
Gear check is UPS trucks in Runners Village in the North Pentagon parking lot, and you must use the clear plastic bag handed out at packet pickup. Your bib has a UPS baggage sticker on the reverse listing your bib number and assigned truck; peel it off and stick it on the bag or volunteers cannot route it. Trucks are organized by event and bib number. Critically, you do not retrieve your bag where you dropped it: pickup is across the river in Rosslyn at the Finish Festival, at Wilson Boulevard and North Lynn Street. Pack accordingly, because start and finish are close but not the same place.
Can I pick up my bib on race morning?
Plan on no. All participants must attend packet pickup at the Health and Fitness Expo at the Building Museum, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 21, 22, 23 and 24, and you select an entry time from your bib confirmation email. The event page states packet pickup is not available on event morning, with an exception only for runners who purchased Race Day Packet Pick-Up. Note that MCM's general FAQ muddies this by saying only that 'some MCMO events allow for race morning packet pick up' and pointing you to the event page; the event page is the stricter and more specific answer.
Can someone else get my bib for me?
Yes, proxy pickup is allowed, but the paperwork is specific. Your proxy needs a hard or digital copy of your completed e-Card, a copy of your photo ID, and their own ID, and they should know your shirt size since the technical shirt is issued at pickup. Parents may sign the waiver and collect packets for their own children under 18. Everyone else must have the e-Card; showing up with just your name will not work.
Is there security screening, and does it slow you down?
Yes, on both ends of the weekend. All runners are screened entering the Building Museum for packet pickup, and all runners and spectators are screened on arrival at the start and finish areas on race morning. MCM maintains a prohibited items list and directs participants to it. Build screening time into your race-morning plan on top of Metro travel; Metro opens at 5:00 a.m. on race day and weekend headways can run up to 15 minutes.
Is the course a Boston qualifier, and is there prize money?
The course is USATF certified, so your official finish time can be used to qualify for Boston, and MCM points runners to the Boston site for the current standards rather than publishing them itself. There is no prize money at all. MCM bills itself as the largest marathon in the world that offers none, which is where 'The People's Marathon' comes from. Note also that a finish time only counts if you cleared all three gauntlets on the certified route.
Anything about the finish that surprises people?
It goes uphill. The course returns to Arlington through Crystal City and finishes on a climb to the Marine Corps War Memorial, which MCM itself flags on its map page. Pair that with the first two and a half miles out of the start climbing roughly 156 feet and the short Key Bridge rise around miles 4.4 to 4.9, and the pattern is clear: the hard climbing is at the very beginning and the very end, with a long flat middle through Georgetown, Hains Point and the National Mall that tempts people into running too fast.
