Where to stay

15 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the start.

The race-week geography

The mistake is treating this like a race where you can drive in on Sunday morning. Police begin shutting streets in and around downtown at 5:30 a.m. (ABC13), and all lanes on dozens of streets along the routes close beginning at 6 a.m. (KPRC), with the general closure window running roughly 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. (houston.com). Start-line streets go first, then Allen Parkway and the westside corridors. That means a hotel outside the ring is not a short drive, it is a road-block problem: your car has to be parked before 5:30 or it is not moving. Book inside the walk radius of the George R. Brown Convention Center, where runners are told to arrive before 5:30 a.m. (ABC13), and the whole transport question disappears. The four downtown hotels already measured are all within a 2-4 minute walk of the start.

Immediate start-line block (Sam Houston Hotel, Hotel ICON)

2-3 min to start

Sam Houston Hotel sits 2 minutes from the start and Hotel ICON 3 minutes, which puts both inside the closure footprint rather than outside it. Congress and Smith are among the streets closed to all lanes (KPRC), so being on foot here is the point. At 5:45 a.m. this pocket is dark, cool and quiet apart from runners walking in, and you are close enough to leave the room at 5:30 and still make the corrals. Nothing will be open for coffee at that hour, so plan on room coffee or what you carry.

Convention centre side (Moxy Houston Downtown, Hyatt Place Houston Downtown)

3-4 min to start

Moxy is 3 minutes out and Hyatt Place 4, both an easy walk to the George R. Brown Convention Center, which is where runners are directed to arrive before 5:30 a.m. (ABC13). GRB is the indoor staging point, so this side of downtown lets you stay warm inside the building instead of standing on a street corner. It is also the simplest post-race walk back: with streets shut until roughly 2 p.m. (houston.com), walking is the only reliable way home, and 3-4 minutes on tired legs is nothing.

Outside downtown (Washington Corridor, Upper Kirby, Galleria)

not walkable

KPRC points drivers to garages and surface lots outside the race footprint and lists neighbourhood driving guides for the Washington Corridor, Upper Kirby and the Galleria area, which tells you those are the places people commute in from rather than stay. Washington itself closes from Congress to Waugh (KPRC), so a Washington Corridor base can be cut off from downtown on race morning. If you book out here, treat 5:30 a.m. as the hard deadline to be parked downtown, not the time you leave.

The morning connection

Two clocks matter and they conflict slightly in the race's own coverage: police are expected to begin shutting streets in and around downtown at 5:30 a.m. (ABC13), while the formal all-lane closures on the route streets are described as beginning at 6 a.m. Sunday (KPRC). Plan to the earlier one. METRO is strongly recommending riders use public transit during race weekend (KPRC), and METRO routes may be adjusted, so check schedules ahead (houston.com). The three measured stops (Preston, Central Station Capitol, Central Station Main) all sit in the downtown core, so rail drops you inside the closed zone rather than outside it, which is exactly what you want when cars cannot get through. Afterwards, expect to walk: streets stay shut until roughly 2 p.m. (houston.com), long after most finishers are done.
