Where to stay
18 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the start.
The race-week geography
The mistake here is treating this like a normal downtown race weekend where you can park at the hotel and drive out afterward. The start and finish sit on the Main Street / River Road / Waterfront Park strip, and LMPD's own listing puts no-parking in force from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday, with Preston Street between Main and River Road already closed from 8 a.m. Friday and the Main/Hancock/Franklin/Clay/River Road/Witherspoon block closing at 4 a.m. Saturday. Every one of those roads reopens at 4 p.m. Saturday, so whatever car you bring into the closure box on Friday night is staying there until mid-afternoon. Book inside the downtown walking radius and plan to not touch the car at all on Saturday.
Waterfront / Galt House block (4th and Main)
about 4 blocks to start and finish
The Galt House is the Official Race Headquarters per the race's own Plan Your Stay page, and it puts itself four blocks from both the start and the finish. It has two parking garages on property, which matters more than the room itself: it means you can leave the car parked through the 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. closure window without hunting for a garage inside the cordon. It also offers complimentary late check-out until 3 p.m. for the first 150 rooms booked, which is the single most useful perk for a marathoner who will not be back in the room until late morning. Note the race site's Runners Kick-Off and late-checkout dates read Friday April 23 / Saturday April 24, while the LMPD and news closure notices are dated Friday April 24 / Saturday April 25, 2026; the site page appears to have rolled over to the following year's weekend.
Fourth Street Live / central business district (2nd to 6th, Liberty to Market)
5-10 blocks
This is the hotel cluster that sits just south and west of the closure box, which is the strategically right side of it. The race's parking page lists garages at 2nd and Market, 5th and Market, Brook and Witherspoon, 1st and Witherspoon (Humana), and 6th and River Road, plus PARC lots at 2nd and Liberty, the Arena Lot between 2nd and 3rd, the Kentucky Center lot on 6th, and Wharf Parking between 2nd Street and Bingham Way. Staying here means the walk to the Main Street start is short and entirely inside the pedestrian zone. At 5:45 a.m. it is quiet, lit, and full of other people in trash bags walking the same direction, because there is only one direction to walk.
South of Main (street-parking belt)
varies
The race's parking page says street parking is available south of Main Street and warns those spots fill up fast. This is the fallback if you are driving in Saturday morning rather than staying downtown, but it is a narrow window: the 4 a.m. inner closures are already up, and the 6 a.m. wave takes 3rd, Market, Muhammad Ali, Broadway, Chestnut, Madison and more. Arriving after about 5:30 a.m. by car means threading a shrinking grid.
Do not park here
n/a
The lot east of Louisville Slugger Field is explicitly off limits: the official parking page states there is no parking available there and that all cars will be towed on race morning. Louisville media coverage of the 2026 closures reports LMPD tagging and towing along the route beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, which lines up with the 10 p.m. Friday start of LMPD's own no-parking window.

The morning connection
Assume you are walking. TARC is the local bus system and its Downtown Transfer Center is the hub, but I could not confirm Saturday first-bus times: the routes-and-schedules page returned a 404 and the homepage lists no service hours, so I cannot tell you anything runs before a 7 a.m. start. Meanwhile the same street grid the buses use downtown is closed from 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday, which means whatever normally serves Main, Market, Broadway and Muhammad Ali is detoured on race morning anyway. The plan that actually works: sleep within walking distance, walk to the start, and walk back from the finish.
Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL. Aerial imagery is from USGS and USDA; other images carry their own source credits. Weather figures use Open-Meteo reanalysis for April 20-28 across 2016-2025 at the start line. Schedule, prices and expo hours were checked in 2026-08-31 and are the fields most likely to move: confirm them on derbyfestivalmarathon.com before you book anything. Spot an error?
