The race-week geography

Runners book Chicago as a distance problem and it is actually a street problem. Grant Park does not close on race morning, it closes days beforehand: in the 2025 official schedule Balbo between Michigan and Columbus and Columbus from Ida B. Wells to Roosevelt shut at 4 a.m. on the Thursday, Columbus from Monroe to Ida B. Wells and Congress Plaza Drive shut at 4 a.m. on the Friday, and Columbus from Randolph to Monroe plus Monroe east of Michigan shut at 4 a.m. on the Saturday. Columbus from Roosevelt to the finish was closed from 4 a.m. the Thursday before all the way to 3 p.m. the Monday after. So the question that matters about a hotel is not how many minutes it is from the start line, it is which side of Michigan Avenue it sits on and whether a car has to touch a closed street to reach the door. Everything in the measured four to nine minute band is on or west of Michigan, which is the right side of the line: you cross Michigan once on foot and you are in the park, and you cross it once more coming out of the finish chute.

The Loop core: Michigan, Wabash, State and Monroe between Randolph and Van Buren

4 to 7 minutes to the Columbus Drive start

The University Club, Chicago Athletic Association, Silversmith and Palmer House cluster all sit inside the box the city defines as the Loop: Wells Street, Van Buren Street, Wabash Avenue and Lake Street. That box is the only downtown area with a stated reopening promise, since the official brochure says all streets in the Loop will be open to traffic by 9 a.m. on race day while the course is still shut. At 5:45 a.m. the Loop is dark and almost entirely free of normal Sunday activity, and what fills it instead is a one-way current of runners walking east on Monroe, Adams and Jackson, which is the safest a downtown gets. Coming back is the real prize: you exit the finish north through Grant Park, cross Michigan, and you are at your door without a train, a bus or a bridge.

New Eastside and north Grant Park: Fairmont, Pendry

7 to 9 minutes

These sit north of Millennium Park near Columbus and Wacker, which is a strong position for Millennium Station and for the Michigan Avenue corridor that stays open north of 11th Street all race day. The catch is Columbus Drive itself: the closure list begins at Randolph and runs south, so the obvious straight walk south to the start is inside the closed zone and you route on Michigan or through the lower levels instead. Mile 1 also runs Columbus from the start to Grand and then Grand to State, closed at 6 a.m. and not reopening until 10:30 a.m., so you are boxed on the north side too. It is an excellent base for the walk in and a mediocre one for the walk out, since the finish exit funnels north on Michigan into the densest pedestrian traffic of the day.

South Loop: Michigan south of Ida B. Wells toward Roosevelt

8 to 15 minutes, and closest to the finish

The Hilton Chicago is here and the marathon names it the official headquarters hotel, 1,544 rooms on Michigan near the start and finish. Race morning you simply walk north on Michigan, which the official brochure confirms stays open in both directions north of 11th Street, so you never need to cross a closed street. You are also nearest the Roosevelt station, which the marathon itself names as the finish line stop on the Red, Green and Orange lines. The trade is the afternoon: Roosevelt Road from Michigan to Columbus was one of the last streets to reopen at 6 p.m., and Michigan from 31st to Roosevelt carries the final two miles of the course, so if your car is parked down here you are not driving it anywhere until evening.

River North

roughly 25 minutes on foot

Local guidance measures River North at about a 25 minute walk to the corrals and flags weekend noise from the bar and restaurant density, which is the exact thing you do not want on a Saturday night. Worse for logistics, River North is inside the early course: Grand Avenue from Columbus to State and State Street from Grand to Jackson both close at 6 a.m. and stay closed until 10:30 and 11 a.m., so your hotel is on the far side of the running course from the finish for the entire morning. It works if you are travelling with people who want a real city weekend. It is the wrong call if your priority is being horizontal fifteen minutes after crossing the line.

Streeterville

no direct walking access; roughly a mile and a half on foot

Local guidance is blunt that Streeterville and the West Loop have no direct walking access and depend on the L or a rideshare. The mitigating fact is that this is one of the few areas cars can still move in: the official brochure keeps Michigan Avenue open in both directions north of 11th Street including the Magnificent Mile, and keeps DuSable Lake Shore Drive open northbound and southbound all day. Even so, the reliable plan from here is walking south on Michigan in the dark rather than trusting a car to get through, and the post-race return means a mile and a half on legs that have just run 26. Choose it for the room, not for the race.

Official housing and the room block

varies

Maritz is the official housing partner and holds the exclusive room blocks, with booking through the marathon housing site. The marathon warns that room availability changes frequently and tells you to check back later if nothing matches your dates, which is a real instruction and not boilerplate: blocks release inventory in waves. The Hilton Chicago is the designated headquarters hotel. Treat the block as a distribution channel for hotels that would otherwise be sold out rather than as a discount.

Dinner the night before: The Village, 71 W Monroe Street

straight west on Monroe from Michigan Avenue

Italian Village at 71 W Monroe holds five concepts in one building, and the one you want is The Village on the second floor, open since 1927 and built on exactly the food you need: freshly made pasta and chicken parmigiana, in a nostalgic room that has fed pre-theater crowds for a century. It is a straight walk west on Monroe from Michigan, so you are never more than a few blocks from your hotel and you are testing tomorrow morning's route in reverse. Book ahead, because the Loop restaurant supply is thin on a Saturday night and marathon weekend eats it. One warning worth knowing in advance: The Village is reachable only by stairs because of the age of the building, so if anyone in your party cannot manage stairs, take the lower level restaurant instead.

The morning connection

Plan on the car being useless from 1 a.m., not from 6 a.m. The official brochure is explicit that towing of vehicles on closed thoroughfares begins at 1 a.m. on race Sunday and that anything not moved by then is ticketed and towed to the nearest auto pound. Course closures themselves land at 6 a.m., and by then the running course has cut the Loop in half: State Street from Grand to Jackson and Jackson Boulevard from State to LaSalle are both shut at 6 a.m. and do not reopen until 11 a.m. The counterweight is that the city keeps the big arteries open all day, so the practical answer for a Loop hotel is that you can drive in before 6 a.m. and you cannot drive in after it, and after roughly 6:15 a.m. you should be walking regardless. The L, and specifically the Red Line, is the only transport in this city that does not care about any of it.
