Chicago Marathon
Sunday, October 11, 2026 · Wave schedule — see logistics
Grant Park, Chicago. The race starts and finishes in Grant Park, with the start and finish only a short walk apart.
The race in 60 seconds
First run in 1977, Chicago Marathon has had time to become part of the city's running calendar. The route forms an open loop, finishing in the same part of the city without returning to the exact start point. The modeled line carries about 306 feet of total climb and ranges from roughly 582 to 633 feet above sea level. Look for Aon Center, Two Prudential Plaza, Trump International Hotel and Tower, Marina City in the flyover, with recognizable forms modeled from architectural records.
Fly the course
The whole course, built from the best available published route trace and an extruded model of Chicago. Scrub it, change the camera, or let it play. Nothing here is a video: it is drawing the city live.
Route statusCurrent community course trace cross-checked against the published route. community trace of the current Grant Park loop course
The route line uses the best published course trace available. Public-domain USGS and USDA aerial photography plus USGS 3DEP elevation are baked into RunRace USA, so the flyover makes no paid map API or third-party runtime requests. Buildings, roads, parks and water use OpenStreetMap, ODbL. This is photographic terrain with modeled architecture, not photogrammetry. Bridge approaches, elevations and facade details are approximations; the organizer's published route remains the reference.
The elevation profile
This Marathon profile covers 26.2 miles, ranges from roughly 582 to 633 feet, and contains about 306 feet of modeled climb.

Race-week weather, measured
At the start line, October 7-15 averaged a low of 51°F and a high of 65°F across 2016-2025. The same window reached 83°F at its warmest and 34°F at its coldest. Measurable rain appeared on about 41% of sampled days. Treat the range, not just the average, as the packing list.
Pace it by effort
The profile and grade strip come from the same route currently loaded in the flyover. Use even pace as a baseline, then protect effort on the highlighted climbs and exposed sections.

Common questions
Is Chicago a lottery race or a qualifier race?
Both, and first-timers usually only find out about the second path too late. The main route is a free non-guaranteed drawing that anyone meeting the age and residency requirements can enter, with no application fee and results announced in December for the following October. Alongside it are several guaranteed paths: a time qualifier standard, legacy status for anyone who has finished Chicago five or more times in the last ten years, official charity teams, and official tour operators. Because the drawing costs nothing to enter, entering it is close to a free option, but if you already have a qualifying marathon time you should use the guaranteed path instead of gambling on the draw.
What marathon time do I need for a guaranteed entry?
For the 2026 cycle the standards were 2:55:00 for men aged 16 to 34 and 3:25:00 for women and non-binary runners in that band, loosening with age to 3:05:00 and 3:35:00 at 40 to 44, 3:20:00 and 3:50:00 at 50 to 54, and 4:00:00 and 4:30:00 at 65 to 69. These are stricter than Boston's standards in several age bands. Two details trip people up: the qualifying time must come from a marathon, since the race states plainly that finish times at other distances will not be considered, and the qualifying course must be certified by USATF, World Athletics or an equivalent governing body. There are no exceptions for narrowly missing a standard.
How long is the qualifying window?
It is a fixed two-year-ish calendar window, not a rolling one, and it closes with the application window rather than on race day. For the 2026 race, a qualifying marathon had to be run between January 1, 2024 and November 18, 2025. That means a fast race run in, say, the spring before the marathon you want to enter is often already too late for that year's application, because applications close in November of the prior year. Plan a qualifier at least a full season ahead of the cycle you are targeting.
I missed the drawing. Can I still get in?
Yes, for a price. After the application window closes, entries remain through the official charity program and official tour operators. Charity entries for 2026 stayed open first-come, first-served through September 15, 2026 and carry a fundraising minimum of $2,200 on top of the entry fee. Tour operator packages for 2026 stayed open through August 16, 2026 and bundle the bib with travel. Both fill and both are guaranteed only through official partners; anything sold outside those channels is not a real entry.
Can I buy someone's bib or have my entry transferred to next year?
No, and this is worth taking seriously in Chicago. The race states that sale or transfer of race entries and bib numbers is strictly prohibited, and doing it gets you disqualified. There is no general deferral either; entry fees are non-refundable unless you bought the optional third-party refundable registration protection at checkout. The 2026 cancellation window ran through October 7, 2026, which is a cancellation, not a rollover to the next year.
How do the waves and corrals actually work?
There are three waves broken into thirteen lettered corrals, and the letters skip I and are A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M and N. Wave 1 is the elites plus corrals A through E, Wave 2 is corrals F, G, H and J, and Wave 3 is corrals K, L, M and N. Wave 2 goes at 8:00 a.m. and Wave 3 at 8:35 a.m. Your corral comes from the estimated finish time you submitted, so a fantasy estimate at registration means an hour of dodging slower runners, and a padded one means a full hour of standing in Grant Park after the first gun.
What time does the first wave actually start?
Here the race's own website contradicts itself and you should plan for the earlier number. The official race day timeline page lists Wave 1 at 7:30 a.m., while the official runner information page lists Wave 1 at 7:35 a.m. Both agree on 8:00 a.m. for Wave 2 and 8:35 a.m. for Wave 3, and both agree the professional men's and women's field goes at 7:30 a.m. with wheelchair and handcycle starts between 7:20 and 7:23 a.m. Treat 7:30 as your Wave 1 gun time, confirm it against whatever your final race-week email says, and get to the corrals early either way.
When do corrals open and how early should I get there?
Corral areas open at 5:30 a.m., which is roughly two hours before the first gun, and that is not padding. Every participant has to pass through security screening before entering Grant Park, and with tens of thousands of runners funneling through gates on the same schedule, the line is the bottleneck, not the walk. If your hotel is one of the downtown ones a few minutes from the start, you still want to be walking over well before 6:30 a.m. rather than at 7:00.
What happens if I show up late or go to the wrong corral?
Chicago enforces this in writing. The rules state that any participant attempting to enter a start corral they are not assigned to will be required to start after all other participants have crossed the start line. That is not a scolding, it is a real penalty, and in a three-wave race it can mean waiting until after the 8:35 a.m. wave clears. It also matters for the cutoff: the course time limit is measured from your wave start, but the end vehicle and the course closures work off the clock, so starting dead last eats into your margin.
What is the time limit and what happens if I fall behind?
The course time limit is 6 hours and 30 minutes, and to be recorded as an official finisher you need to hold roughly a 15-minute per mile pace or faster. An official end vehicle starts behind the last starter and holds that 15-minute pace down the course. If you drop behind it you lose full course support and official finisher status. There is a wrinkle in the published times: the official course page says finishers arriving after 4 p.m. may not be recorded as official, while the race day timeline lists the finish line window running from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for all official finishers. Do the math for your own wave rather than assuming the headline 6:30 applies to a 4 p.m. wall clock.
When does gear check open and close, and how long does retrieval take?
Gear check opens at 5:30 a.m., the same time as the corrals, and closes at 4:00 p.m. The part first-timers underestimate is the back end. The race itself warns that getting from the finish line to the post-race party area can take 30 minutes or longer, so budget real time between crossing the line and having your phone and dry clothes in hand. If someone is meeting you, agree on a spot and a rough time before you start, because you will not be texting them from the finish chute. Whether the race issues an official bag at the expo was not confirmed on a page still live at the time of writing, so check your race-week email for that detail.
Can I run with a hydration vest or a handheld bottle?
A handheld bottle or a fuel belt is fine; a hydration backpack is not. Chicago explicitly prohibits Camelbaks and any type of hydration backpack, along with large bags, backpacks, suitcases and rolling bags, both in Grant Park and on the course. Also banned: hard-sided coolers, props and non-running equipment including flagpoles and sticks, selfie sticks and camera mounts, chairs, alcohol, weapons and drones. Costumes that cover the full face or that extend bulkily beyond the outline of your body are out too. Everyone entering Grant Park passes through security screening, and anything flagged is confiscated at the screener's discretion. There are 20 aid stations spaced roughly one to two miles apart with water and lemon-lime Gatorade Endurance, so you do not need to carry much.
Are headphones allowed, and can I push a stroller or bring a dog?
Headphones are allowed for ordinary participants, with the race asking that you stay alert to your surroundings, but they are barred for High Performance Program athletes and for anyone competing for overall awards under USATF championship rules. Strollers, baby joggers, skateboards, rollerblades and any unauthorized bicycles or other wheeled devices are prohibited on the course. Pets are prohibited except for service animals trained to perform a specific task for a person with a disability; an emotional support animal does not clear that bar.
Is running Chicago unregistered really a problem?
Yes. The rules state that nobody is authorized to be on the race course unless they are a registered participant or authorized event staff, and every participant must wear their own personally assigned bib visibly on the front. Combined with the ban on selling or transferring bibs, the practical effect is that both the bandit and the person who handed over the bib are exposed, and Grant Park entry runs through security screening anyway. With around 50,000 entrants and 52,062 finishers in 2024, the field is large enough that the organizers police this closely.
