Sleep where race morning works

Where to stay

No hotel sits within a ten minute walk of the start, though 6 are within twenty. Plan the morning around that.

The race-week geography

The mistake runners make is treating drive time as the number that matters. On marathon Sunday the whole southern half of the property is a racecourse: roads begin closing as early as 11:00 p.m. the night before, the marathon itself runs 4:30 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m., and closures hit hardest near Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach and Hollywood Studios (insidethemagic.net). What you actually want is a resort inside the runDisney bus system and, ideally, one you can walk home to. Walt Disney World resorts plus Shades of Green and the Swan/Dolphin get complimentary race transportation; anyone not at a host resort must provide their own way to every event (thecastlerun.com). A 12-minute drive at noon Thursday is not a 12-minute drive at 3 a.m. Sunday.

EPCOT-area resorts (Beach Club Villas)

Walk to the start/finish area via the EPCOT International Gateway; no bus required

This is the highest-value base for this race. EPCOT-area resorts connect on foot to EPCOT and to Hollywood Studios (insidethemagic.net), and the start and finish are both in the EPCOT parking lot area (thecastlerun.com). At 5:45 a.m. the paths along the BoardWalk and Crescent Lake are lit, quiet and full of other runners walking in. The real payoff is the return: you finish and walk back rather than queuing for a bus in a mylar blanket.

Port Orleans French Quarter / Riverside (Bonnet Creek area)

Not walkable to the start; race buses only

Both are Disney-owned, so both are inside the complimentary race bus system (thecastlerun.com). Marathon buses run resorts to start from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. and finish to resorts 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. per thecastlerun.com; themouseforless.com lists a narrower 3:00 to 5:00 a.m. outbound and 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. return, and advises boarding by 4:00 a.m. to reach your corral on time. Treat 3:00 a.m. as your board time and both readings are satisfied. French Quarter is compact and quiet; Riverside is much larger, so the internal walk to the bus depot adds real minutes at 3 a.m.

Non-host hotels (off-property, Bonnet Creek non-Disney)

No race transportation at all

Guests not staying at a host resort must arrange their own transportation to every event (thecastlerun.com), which on marathon morning means driving into a property whose roads start closing the previous night. Rideshare is unreliable because drivers struggle with the closures (insidethemagic.net). If you stay off-property, plan to be parked at EPCOT before the free-parking cutoff and accept a long wait in the dark.

The morning connection

Everything funnels through EPCOT, which is both start and finish (thecastlerun.com), and the driving picture is unusually hostile: the main EPCOT entrance from World Drive is closed roughly 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. on race mornings and roads begin closing as early as 11:00 p.m. the night before (themouseforless.com). Drivers heading to the marathon take I-4 to exit 65, Osceola Parkway West, and follow signs to EPCOT; the other three races use exit 64/192 West, and anyone coming from 192 is strongly urged to use the World Drive exit because of significant delays starting at 3:30 a.m. (thecastlerun.com). Buses do run early enough for a 4:30 a.m. start, but only barely, and only if you board at the front of the window rather than the back.
