First run in 2008, Indianapolis Monumental Marathon has had time to become part of the city's running calendar. The route is a loop, keeping the start and finish in the same part of the city. The modeled line carries about 427 feet of total climb and ranges from roughly 697 to 776 feet above sea level. Look for JW Marriott Indianapolis, Lucas Oil Stadium, Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Salesforce Tower (Chase Tower) in the flyover, with recognizable forms modeled from architectural records.

Fly the course

The whole course, built from the best available published route trace and an extruded model of Indianapolis. Scrub it, change the camera, or let it play. Nothing here is a video: it is drawing the city live.

Route statusCurrent community course trace cross-checked against the published route. 'Monumental Marathon', Indianapolis IN, created 2026-04-28; verified via https://ridewithgps.com/routes/54867235.json (1112 track points). Matches the CURRENT (2025-format) course: starts on S Missouri St just south of W Maryland St (the new-for-2025 start next to Victory Field, confirmed against the official 2025 course-map PDF) and uses the 2025 Boulevard Pl -> W 42nd St routing; landmark ordering (easternmost mi ~8.7, Broad Ripple north tip ~mi 14, White River Pkwy westernmost ~mi 21.3) matches the official map. CAVEATS: drawn slack — measures 43.63 km / 27.08 mi (~0.9 mi long, incl. an overshoot at the Broad Ripple tip), and the drawn line ends near W Maryland St, ~0.4 mi short of the actual W New York St @ Capitol Ave finish.

The route line uses the best published course trace available. Public-domain USGS and USDA aerial photography plus USGS 3DEP elevation are baked into RunRace USA, so the flyover makes no paid map API or third-party runtime requests. Buildings, roads, parks and water use OpenStreetMap, ODbL. This is photographic terrain with modeled architecture, not photogrammetry. Bridge approaches, elevations and facade details are approximations; the organizer's published route remains the reference.

Race-week weather, measured

At the start line, November 3-11 averaged a low of 41°F and a high of 58°F across 2016-2025. The same window reached 77°F at its warmest and 19°F at its coldest. Measurable rain appeared on about 27% of sampled days. Treat the range, not just the average, as the packing list.

Pace it by effort

Common questions

Do I actually need to register early, or can I sign up close to race day?

Treat this as a race that sells out. The official site currently states general registration for all in-person distances is sold out, with only limited charity entries remaining through partners. Registration for the following year opens during race weekend and reopens at 12:00 AM ET on January 1, with the first 1,000 registrants getting the lowest price. Waiting until fall is not an option.

Can I transfer my bib to someone else if I get hurt?

Yes, but only before the deadline. Bib transfers to another person run through your participant account until September 25 at 11:59 PM ET, with a $20 fee, and are prohibited after that. First-timers who get injured in October find the window already closed. Note the race also warns publicly about Facebook-based registration transfer scams, so do not buy a bib off social media.

What about deferring to next year instead?

Deferral is not open-ended. The race allows deferrals only for injury, pregnancy, or military deployment, with documentation submitted by September 25 at 5:00 PM ET and a $20 fee. A deferral extends a maximum of one year, or two years for pregnancy with documentation. There is no general change-of-mind deferral, and no refund path outside the event-cancellation policy.

Are the start waves enforced, and can I move up?

There is a wave start with multiple start times assigned from the estimated finish time you entered at registration. You may move back into a slower wave on race day, but you may not move up into a faster one. Rules list attempting an unauthorized start wave as grounds for disqualification. Timing is chip-based, so your individual time is unaffected by a later wave.

What are the course cutoffs and what happens if I miss one?

The marathon has a 7-hour limit and requires a 16:00 per mile minimum pace, and you must reach the marathon/half split point by 10:25 AM. The half requires 16:00 per mile through the first 10 miles. No times are recorded after 3:30 PM for either distance. Continuing after course closure is allowed but at your own risk without full support.

Are the 3:30 PM cutoff rules stated consistently?

Not quite, and both readings matter. The FAQ frames 3:30 PM as the half marathon course closing with no times recorded after that. The separate rules and policies page states no times are recorded after 3:30 PM for the marathon or the half. Assume 3:30 PM is a hard timing shutoff for both distances and plan the marathon around the 7-hour limit.

How does gear check work and what bag can I use?

You are given a clear plastic bag at packet pickup at the expo, and that specific bag is your gear check bag. Any other bag is turned away, and all bags are subject to search. Use the pull-off tag on your bib, ideally attached before you arrive. Anything left at the gear check tent after 3:30 PM on race day is donated to charity.

What gear and items are banned on the course?

Prohibited: animals, bicycles, baby joggers, strollers, roller and inline skates and other unapproved wheeled devices, selfie sticks, camera mounts and rigs, large bags, coolers, props, non-running items, and weapons. Allowed: hydration packs, headphones, and cell phones as long as they do not create a safety hazard. Throw-away warmup layers are collected and donated, so cheap throwaways are fine.

What else gets people disqualified here?

The rulebook is stricter than most first-timers expect. Automatic disqualification for not wearing your assigned bib, helping a bandit with a fake bib, wearing two or more event-issued timing devices, leaving the course, or intentionally shortening the route. You may also be disqualified for missing timing checkpoint splits or taking non-approved assistance. Wear the bib visible on the front the whole way.

What is this race actually known for, and what should I expect from November weather?

The race markets USATF-certified courses that are fast and flat, and claims thousands of Boston qualifiers and PR seekers since 2008. That draws a fast, goal-time field: expect crowded early miles and heavy pacer traffic, with a minimum of 20 marathon pace groups from 3:00 to 6:33. On weather, from my own general knowledge rather than any race page, early-November Indianapolis mornings typically start in the 30s Fahrenheit, which is fast for racing but cold for standing around in the start corral.
