Where to stay

20 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the finish.

The race-week geography

The mistake here is booking near the start. The start is on Ala Moana Boulevard at the Queen Street Extension, the finish is at Kapiolani Park roughly two miles away at the far Diamond Head end of Waikiki, and everything you want after the race (your shower, your bag, your medal, your food) is at the finish end. The official partner hotels make the geometry obvious: the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort lists itself as 2.2 miles from the start and 0.6 miles from the finish. Book for the finish and treat the start as a 30-to-40-minute pre-dawn walk, because that walk is easy and the trip back from Kapiolani Park at 9 a.m. with dead legs is not. The other thing runners underestimate is the tow-away window. Tow-away zones are in effect from midnight until 5 p.m. Sunday, and Monsarrat Avenue from Kalakaua to Paki is signed no-parking tow-away on both sides. If your rental car is on a street rather than in a garage, move it Saturday night.

Central Waikiki (Kalakaua and Kuhio, Beachcomber to Royal Hawaiian)

About 2 miles to the start; roughly 0.8 miles to the finish

This is the default and it works. The official partner block is with four Outrigger properties using promo code MARATHON: the Waikiki Beachcomber at 2300 Kalakaua (2 miles to start, 0.8 to finish), the Waikiki Beach Resort at 2335 Kalakaua (2.2 and 0.6), the Reef at 2169 Kalia Road (1.8 and 1.1), and the Waikiki Paradise at 150 Kaiulani (2 and 0.8). At 5:45 a.m. this stretch is not asleep: it is the direction everyone else is walking, so you get streetlights, other runners in trash bags, and open ABC Stores. Expect your car to be stuck, though. Kalakaua Avenue is detoured left onto Kuhio Avenue from 3:30 a.m., so the hotel's front drive may only be reachable from the mauka side.

Diamond Head end / Kapiolani Park edge (Kapahulu, Monsarrat, the Zoo blocks)

About 2.3 to 2.6 miles to the start; a few blocks to the finish

The best post-race base and the worst pre-race one. You finish, collect your bag from the clothing check inside Kapiolani Park, pick up your medal and finisher shirt at the tent, and walk home in ten minutes. The cost is race morning: Kapahulu Avenue makai-bound closes at Kuhio at 1:30 a.m., Monsarrat from Kalakaua to Paki closes at 4:30 a.m. and stays closed until 3 p.m., and Paki closes at 4:30 a.m. for the duration. Nothing motorized is getting you out of here after 4:30. On the plus side, the courtesy shuttle to the start leaves from the Honolulu Zoo, which is right in this pocket, so you are already at the pickup point. It is quiet and dark at 5:45 a.m. but full of runners walking toward the Zoo.

Ala Moana and Kakaako (Ward, Ala Moana Center area)

Under a mile to the start; 2.5+ miles from the finish

Tempting because you can roll out of bed at 4:30 and stroll to the corral, and it is where the drop-off points are. But you are optimizing the easy half. The Ala Moana Boulevard corridor from Atkinson to Ward is detoured from 12:30 a.m. and does not reopen until roughly 8 a.m., and Piikoi Street shuts in both directions from Kapiolani Boulevard to Ala Moana Boulevard at 1 a.m. with local resident access only until 3 a.m. After you finish at Kapiolani Park you have to get across a still-closed Waikiki to get back. Worth it only if you are here for reasons other than the race.

Kahala and East Honolulu

On the course, but far from both ends

Avoid unless you have a specific reason. The course runs out Kalanianaole Highway through Hawaii Kai and back through Kahala Avenue, and access there is restricted from 3:30 a.m. with contraflow lanes and detours onto Ainakoa and Lunalilo Home Road. You would be trying to drive to a 5 a.m. start through the middle of the second half of your own race. It can be done if you leave before 3 a.m., but it is a lot of variables for a marathon morning.

The morning connection

There is no rail near this course and no realistic transit answer for a 5 a.m. start, so plan on your feet. The race's own advice is blunt: walk or get dropped off, because there is no guarantee of space on the shuttles. A complimentary courtesy shuttle does run from the Honolulu Zoo between 2 and 4 a.m., dropping at Atkinson Drive and Ala Moana Boulevard, which puts you a short walk from the corrals. That window is the thing to note: it stops at 4 a.m. for a 5 a.m. start, so the shuttle is not a 4:30 a.m. option. Most people staying in Waikiki simply walk the two miles down Ala Moana Boulevard in the dark with a few thousand others, which takes 30 to 40 minutes and doubles as a warm-up. Driving yourself is a poor bet: closures cascade from 12:30 a.m. onward and tow-away enforcement starts at midnight.
