Getting In · Iconic road race
Falmouth Road Race
It started in 1973 as a run between two bars on Cape Cod. Fifty years later it draws world-class fields, ten thousand runners, and a crowd that lines the shore road the entire way. Falmouth is the best seven miles in American road racing.

- Woods Hole to Falmouth Heights

- Lottery, then a nonprofit bib
Falmouth's course is a specific kind of perfect: start at the Woods Hole lighthouse, run along Vineyard Sound with the water right there, climb a short hill at mile four, and finish up a final rise into Falmouth Heights with the beach crowd yelling. It's short enough to race hard and beautiful enough that you keep looking sideways.
What sets it apart is the elite field. Falmouth has always attracted the very best road racers in the world, and because the course is only seven miles, recreational runners get to watch legendary athletes on the same course on the same morning, often within sight.

Questions runners actually ask
How competitive is Falmouth's lottery?
Competitive but reasonable. It typically opens in spring for the August race, and the Numbers for Nonprofits charity program is a reliable alternative.
Is it a hard course?
Rolling, with a climb around mile four and a rise to the finish. It is short and fast but not flat, and mid-August humidity on the Cape is a real factor.

Need the races in between? The hard part of a bucket list year is everything else on the calendar: the qualifier, the tune-up, the long run with a bib on.
