Where to stay
7 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the finish.
The race-week geography
The thing runners get wrong here is treating the finish line as the thing to be near. Grandma's is point to point and every single participant is bused from Duluth up to Two Harbors, so your real address on race morning is a bus loading lot, not a hotel lobby. Canal Park is still the best base, but it earns that on the strength of the walk home after 26.2 miles and the walk to the DECC before dawn, not on proximity to the start. The second mistake is trying to book online: the race says many Duluth hotels do not accept online bookings for marathon weekend at all, so call the property directly, and if you are shut out, check again in April and May when the block cancellations release.
Canal Park
Finish line is here. About 5 to 15 minutes on foot to the DECC bus loading lot at 350 Harbor Drive.
This is the default and it is the right default: the finish chute, the gear bag return, the expo, the spaghetti dinner and the busiest bus loading lot are all inside a fifteen-minute walk. Hotels the race itself names here include Canal Park Lodge, Lift Bridge Lodge, Hampton Inn Canal Park and The Inn on Lake Superior. At 4:30 a.m. in June it is cold and damp off Lake Superior even when the forecast high is 70, it is quiet apart from a steady trickle of other runners walking toward the DECC, and it is already light out this close to the solstice. Book it first, call to do it, and accept that it is the most expensive zone.
Downtown Duluth
10 to 15 minutes downhill to the DECC, and much of downtown is connected by climate-controlled skywalk.
The Holiday Inn and Suites Duluth Downtown is the official lodging partner of the race and the city's largest full-service hotel; the Sheraton Duluth is the other obvious downtown option. The skywalk system matters more than it sounds: you can move between hotel, parking and much of downtown without going outside, which is worth something in a cold pre-dawn drizzle. The tradeoff is that Duluth is built on a hillside, so the walk to the DECC is downhill going out and uphill coming back, and after the marathon you will be doing that leg on wrecked quads. Good compromise if Canal Park is sold out.
Over the hill: Miller Hill and UMD
Not walkable to anything. You drive to a loading lot and park.
Hampton Inn North sits next to the Miller Hill Mall, which is itself a bus loading location with a huge free lot, and the airport is ten minutes from downtown on this side of the hill. UMD is a second loading location, and the race notes the DECC and UMD have historically been the two busiest. Campus housing is also sold through UMD and the College of Saint Scholastica, which is the cheap option. The cost is that you have no walk to the finish: after the race you queue for a return shuttle back up the hill, which runs 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Superior, Wisconsin
Not walkable. Drive to UW-Superior at 2701 Catlin Avenue and board there.
Superior is across the bay and is usually the price relief valve when Duluth is full, and the DTA bus system does serve it. The catch is that the Superior loading window is fifteen minutes earlier than the Duluth ones on both races: 4:15 to 4:45 a.m. for the half, 5:15 to 6:00 a.m. for the full, because the bus has further to go. Return buses come back to Wessman Arena. The race's own lodging page does not list Superior properties, so you are booking blind on the usual channels.
Two Harbors and the North Shore
Not walkable to the finish, which is 24 miles away. Two Harbors High School is the loading lot.
Contrary to the rule that nobody stays at the start, this is the one zone that buys you sleep: marathon loading at Two Harbors High School is 6:00 to 6:30 a.m., the latest window of any location, because the start line is only a couple of miles up the road. You still must take the official bus, and parking is in two lots on the high school campus. The price you pay is on the back end: your car is 24 miles from where you finish, and the return buses to Two Harbors are the only ones that do not run continuously, they depart on the hour. Worth considering if you are driving in and sleep matters more to you than a short post-race shuffle to a hotel room.

The morning connection
There is no negotiating this part. The race states that all marathon and half marathon participants must take the provided transportation to the start line, that there is no access and no parking anywhere near either start, and that individual drop-offs at the start are strictly prohibited. A car gets you to a loading lot and no further. Once you are inside Duluth, Canal Park and downtown are easy to cover on foot, and the DTA plus a seasonal trolley fill in the rest, but public transit is not what gets you to Two Harbors on race morning; the buses are.
Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL. Aerial imagery is from USGS and USDA; other images carry their own source credits. Weather figures use Open-Meteo reanalysis for June 15-23 across 2016-2025 at the start line.
