Sleep where race morning works
Where to stay
Nothing is walkable from this start line, so the question is which town to base yourself in.
The race-week geography
Understand one thing before you book: no hotel here is walkable to the start. The park permit forbids buses and shuttles, so wherever you sleep, race morning ends the same way for everyone - you drive to Waldameer Park or the Tom Ridge Center, leave the car in a free lot, and walk half a mile downhill into the park. The real decision is therefore not proximity to the start line, it is how long the pre-dawn drive is and whether you want dinner within walking distance the night before. The club publishes a hotel list as a courtesy and explicitly endorses none of them; its own measuring method is to route from your hotel to Sara's Eatery at 25 Peninsula Drive and add half a mile.
Peninsula Drive gateway, West Erie 16505
None, but a 4 to 5 minute drive
The strip right at the park entrance, next to Waldameer amusement park. The Riviera Motel at 3107 West Lake Road is the closest bed on the club's list at 1.5 miles. You can be in the parking lot minutes after you wake up, which on a 7 a.m. start with a half-mile approach walk is worth more than it sounds. The trade is that this is motel-grade lodging on a seasonal beach strip, with Sara's Eatery and the Waldameer area about the extent of the dining. Book here if you want the shortest possible morning and do not care where you eat.
West 12th Street corridor, 16505
6 to 8 minute drive
The Comfort Inn Erie at 3041 W 12th St sits 2.5 miles out on a straight shot down Peninsula Drive to Waldameer. This is the compromise pick: a predictable chain room at non-downtown prices, still close enough that you are not setting a 4:45 alarm. The corridor itself is industrial and charmless, so plan on driving to dinner.
Glenwood and West 26th, 16506
8 to 10 minute drive
The Glass House Inn at 3202 West 26th Street, 3.5 miles out, is the independent option and sits in a quieter residential stretch. Good if you want somewhere calm the night before a marathon and are indifferent to hotel loyalty points. Nothing to walk to for dinner.
Bayfront and downtown Erie, 16507
12 to 15 minute drive
The Sheraton Erie Bayfront at 55 West Bay Drive, the Courtyard Erie Bayfront at 2 Sassafras Pier, and the Bayfront Cobblestone at 701 West Bayfront Parkway sit 4.5 to 6 miles from the start. This is the only zone where the weekend feels like a trip: you can walk to dinner, walk the waterfront, and have a non-runner in your party do something on Saturday. You pay for it on Sunday with the longest realistic drive that still feels sane, plus the half-mile walk at the other end. Best choice if you are bringing family.
Peach Street and Interchange Road at I-90, 16509
15 to 20 minute drive
The chain cluster off the interstate: SpringHill Suites, TownePlace Suites, Fairfield Inn, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Residence Inn, Courtyard, Home2 Suites, Holiday Inn Express, Wingate, Microtel, Econolodge, Candlewood. Anywhere from 5.5 to 12 miles out. This is where the rooms and the low rates are, where the chain restaurants are, and where you land naturally if you are driving in on I-90. The trade is a genuine 5:15 to 5:30 a.m. departure, and it is the zone most likely to make you miss the 6:15 arrival deadline if anything goes wrong.
Fairview and Sterrettania, 16415
18 to 20 minute drive
The Quality Inn & Suites of Presque Isle at 6467 Sterrettania Road, 9.5 miles west. Despite the name it is not near the park. Its case is price and a westbound I-90 arrival. There is nothing around it, so treat it as a bed only.
Harborcreek, 16510
20 to 25 minute drive
The Cobblestone Hotel & Suites at 4995 Station Road, 11.5 miles east and the newest property on the club's list. Sensible only if you are arriving from the east or Buffalo direction and would rather not cross the city twice. The longest race-morning drive of any listed hotel.
Hotels, by walk to the start
Two things bite people. First, whatever you book, budget the extra half-mile walk in and, more painfully, the same half mile back uphill to your car after 26.2 miles. Second, spectators are subject to the same rules: they must park at Waldameer and walk in, they may not stand on any roadway inside the park (the park issues fines), and they are not permitted in the finish line area. There are no food vendors and no drink machines anywhere in the park, so anyone coming to watch needs to carry in their own food and water for what may be a five-hour morning.
No walkable hotel inventory was found around the course endpoints.

The morning connection
There is no race transport of any kind. The club states the reason directly: under its Presque Isle State Park permit, there will be no buses to carry runners or spectators to the start or back to parking afterwards. Everyone parks in the same two free lots outside the park and walks in. Plan the walk as part of your warm-up, and plan the return leg as part of your recovery.
