Where to stay
17 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the start.
The race-week geography
The mistake here is treating Detroit like a city where you drive to your hotel on race morning. You can't. The start and finish sit on top of each other in the Fort Street / Campus Martius core, the course wraps the whole downtown loop, and news coverage of recent editions says roads along the course begin closing as early as 4 a.m. on marathon Sunday. So the hotel decision is really a walking decision: the race's own FAQ says "Most of the Downtown Detroit hotels are located within walking distance of our start and finish lines," and that walkability is the entire product you are buying. The second thing runners get wrong is booking wide. There is no named host hotel; instead the race says "You can reserve a hotel room through our official housing provider TriMar USA" and adds, in bold on their own page, "ONLY use these hotels that support our event," with a Passkey portal (book.passkey.com/go/dfpmarathon26) for the 2026 race. Book inside that block, inside the loop, and your race morning becomes an elevator ride and a four-minute walk.
Fort Street / Financial District core (start line)
~4 minutes to the start
This is the tightest possible base: the start-finish complex sits on Fort Street, and the Fort Pontchartrain Detroit a Wyndham Hotel is about four minutes from it on foot. Its practical value is that you never have to solve the closure problem at all, because you are already inside the ring before the barricades go up. At 5:45 a.m. this stretch is empty office-district sidewalk, well lit, with runners already trickling toward Fort Street in trash bags, so you are walking with company rather than alone. The catch is that being inside the ring cuts both ways: once closures start, a car parked at the hotel is a car you are not moving until roads reopen.
Congress / Larned blocks (Detroit Foundation Hotel, Courtyard Detroit Downtown)
~4 minutes to the start
Both the Detroit Foundation Hotel and the Courtyard Detroit Downtown sit roughly four minutes from the start, one block deeper into the financial core than the Fort Pontchartrain. Functionally these are interchangeable with the Fort Street option for race logistics, and the choice comes down to room quality rather than distance. The relevant detail is that the race puts gear check on Monroe just north of Campus Martius, not at the start line, and warns "There is no gear check at the start line so give yourself plenty of time to check gear and make it to the start line." From these hotels you can do gear check and still reach the corral without hurrying, which is the whole argument for the zone.
Greektown / Campus Martius side (east of the finish)
short walk to the finish and to gear check
Greektown is one of the four staging areas the race names in its own driving directions, alongside RenCen/Riverwalk, the Comerica Park/Ford Field area, and Corktown. It sits east of the finish, which makes it the natural base if you care more about the walk back than the walk out: gear check is on Monroe just north of Campus Martius and Runner Reunite is "Located on Woodward on the northwest side of Campus Martius," both of which are on this side of downtown. At 5:45 a.m. Greektown is the one part of downtown with residual overnight activity rather than pure office quiet, so it feels less deserted than Fort Street. It is also the zone where a car is most likely to still be extractable after the race, because it is at the outer edge of the start-line closure box.
RenCen / Riverwalk and Corktown (outside the ring)
driving or transit to the start
The race names RenCen/Riverwalk to the south and Corktown to the west as parking-and-approach zones, and mentions "RenCen area parking garages" specifically. These work as lodging bases only if you accept a transit or long-walk approach on race morning, because they sit on the far side of course lines rather than inside the start box. Corktown in particular is separated from the start by the Michigan Avenue and Fort Street corridors that the course uses. Choose these when the downtown block is sold out, not as a first preference.

The morning connection
Assume your car is parked and stays parked. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel closes on race Sunday, and the race's own pages give two different windows for it: the current FAQ says the closure "will last from approximately 6:15-10:30 a.m.," while the race's own getting-downtown guide says the tunnel is "closed to vehicle traffic from 6:15 a.m. and will reopen to traffic at 10:00a.m." That tunnel is your mile 7.71-8.89 Underwater Mile, +60 feet, which is exactly why it is shut. The Ambassador Bridge runs on a similar clock, described on the race site as "closed to vehicle traffic from 6 a.m. until the last runner clears the bridge, which will be approximately 9:15 a.m.", while the current FAQ softens that to "restricted traffic." Around all of it, closures on named streets ripple outward: eastbound Fort Street closes at Grand Boulevard, southbound Woodward at Charlotte/Edmund, the Lodge southbound after the Howard Street exit, Lafayette westbound at Iroquois, and northbound streets off Jefferson are limited because of the Larned Street course lines. News coverage of the most recent edition says course roads start closing as early as 4 a.m. Neither the race nor the city published a tow-away enforcement time on any page I fetched, so treat any on-street space near the course as a space you should not use at all rather than gambling on a posted hour.
Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL. Aerial imagery is from USGS and USDA; other images carry their own source credits. Weather figures use Open-Meteo reanalysis for October 14-22 across 2016-2025 at the start line.
