Sleep where race morning works

Where to stay

3 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the start, and 20 within twenty. Where you book matters more here than it does at most races.

The race-week geography

The mistake here is assuming you need to hunt for a good location. Columbus stacks nearly its entire hotel inventory into a few downtown blocks, and the race's own travel page lists more than fifteen properties at 1.1 miles or less from the start and finish, so almost any downtown booking puts you inside a walk. The real decision is not distance but which side of the closed streets you land on and whether you ever have to move your car again. The race names the Hyatt Regency Columbus as its host hotel at 0.5 miles, with Courtyard Columbus Downtown (0.4 miles), Renaissance Columbus (0.6 miles) and Hyatt House (2.0 miles) listed as partners; note that the travel page gives phone numbers but no block rate or booking code, so if you want a race rate you have to ask for it by phone. One thing that is easy to get wrong: the pre-measured drive times to these hotels are irrelevant on race morning, because the streets feeding the start are the ones being closed.

Arena District / North Bank (closest to the start and finish)

roughly 0.4 to 0.7 miles per the race's own hotel list

This is the block the race is built around, and Courtyard Columbus Downtown at 0.4 miles is the shortest walk on the official list. Hotel LeVeque sits at 0.7 miles and Residence Inn at 0.8, both still an easy pre-dawn walk. The advantage is not the minutes saved but that you never touch a car: Neil Avenue is closed from Nationwide Boulevard to the start and finish line, which is exactly the approach a car would want. At 5:45 a.m. this district is quiet, well lit and full of people in throwaway layers walking the same direction, so navigation is a matter of following the crowd.

Convention Center / High Street spine

0.5 to 0.6 miles by the race's list

Hyatt Regency Columbus, the designated host hotel at 0.5 miles, is attached to the convention center, and Drury Inn & Suites Columbus Convention Center (0.5), Canopy Columbus Downtown (0.6), Renaissance Columbus (0.6) and Sonesta Columbus Downtown (0.6) sit in the same cluster. Choosing the host hotel is worth something beyond distance: it is where race staff and the largest concentration of runners will be, which usually means the elevators, lobby coffee and bathroom queues are running on race-morning time rather than hotel time. The walk down to the start crosses the Spring Street and Long Street corridors that the race lists as closed, so plan to cross on foot rather than in a vehicle.

Capitol Square and the southern downtown edge

1.0 to 1.1 miles by the race's list

Sheraton Columbus Hotel at Capitol Square is listed at 1 mile, with Le Meridien and Westin Columbus at 1.1. This is a twenty-minute walk, which is a legitimate warm-up but a real cost if the morning is cold and you are carrying a gear bag. The upside is that you are further from the closure ring, so a car parked in a hotel garage here is less likely to be trapped behind barricades if you need to leave soon after finishing. Streets are emptier at 5:45 a.m. than in the Arena District, so walk the main lit corridors rather than cutting through side streets.

Outer downtown (2 miles and beyond)

1.8 to 2.0 miles by the race's list

Hyatt House at 2.0 miles is a listed race partner and Home2Suites is at 1.8, so these are genuinely endorsed options rather than fallbacks. At this range the walk stops being casual and you are making a real decision about rideshare in, which the race itself suggests as an alternative to driving. Book here for price or availability, not convenience, and if you do, plan the morning around being dropped off outside the closure ring and walking the last stretch.

The morning connection

Assume you will walk, and plan the car out of the picture entirely. The race publishes three closed streets around the start and finish (Long Street between High and Hocking, Spring Street between West and Hocking, and Neil Avenue from Nationwide Boulevard down to the start and finish line) but does not publish closure times for them, so the safe read is that they are gone well before the 7:30 a.m. gun. The corrals open at 6:00 a.m., and the race's own advice is blunt: double your normal travel time, and consider carpooling, bike share or rideshare instead of driving yourself. Two things people plan around that are not there: the free CBUS downtown circulator is currently suspended, and on the OSU stretch of the course all campus bus routes including on-demand service are suspended during the closure window. If you book downtown and walk, none of that matters.
