Where to stay

11 hotels inside a ten minute walk of the finish.

The race-week geography

The mistake is booking near the start. CIM is point to point: the start is in Folsom's foothills and the finish is at 7th Street & Capitol Mall in downtown Sacramento, and the race's own instruction is blunt — runners may NOT drive themselves to the start, and there is no vehicle access to the start. So your hotel choice is really a shuttle choice. Stay downtown and you walk to the Location A bus behind the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center (K Street & 13th St), which departs by 4:30 a.m. sharp, then finish a few blocks from your room. Stay in Point West or Folsom and you get a partner-hotel shuttle out and a return bus back, but after 26.2 miles you are waiting on N Street between 9th & 10th for a bus instead of taking an elevator. The official headquarters hotel is the Sheraton Grand Sacramento, 1230 J Street (916-447-1700), which requires a non-refundable deposit equal to one night's room and tax; CIM lists Hyatt Regency Sacramento (1209 L Street) and Holiday Inn – Arena (300 J Street) as downtown partners with finish-line proximity and Location A shuttle access.

Downtown / Capitol Mall (the default, and the right one)

3-6 min to the finish at 7th & Capitol Mall

The measured cluster sits right on top of the finish: Hyatt Centric Downtown Sacramento about 3 minutes from the finish, The Citizen Hotel about 5, Kimpton Sawyer and the AC Hotel about 6. Race day this zone is walk-only anyway — Capitol Mall and L Street are closed from 4:00 a.m. and do not fully reopen until 3:00-7:00 p.m. At 5:45 a.m. it is dark, quiet, cold and damp, with a stream of bibbed runners funneling east on K Street toward 13th; it feels safe because of the volume of runners, not because anything else is open. Budget 10-15 minutes to walk from a Capitol Mall hotel to the Location A boarding area and be there well before the 4:30 a.m. hard departure.

Sheraton Grand / J Street (headquarters)

about 5-8 min to the finish; ~2 blocks to Location A

1230 J Street puts you roughly a block from the Convention Center west lobby where the Location A buses stage, which is the single best geometry for a 4:30 a.m. departure. It also means you are inside the downtown closure ring, so plan to have the car parked before Saturday evening and left alone. Note the non-refundable one-night deposit condition on the block.

Point West (Cal Expo)

not walkable to the finish; shuttle both directions

Five partner hotels here — Fairfield Inn & Suites Cal Expo, TownePlace Suites Cal Expo, Courtyard by Marriott Cal Expo, DoubleTree Sacramento and Hilton Sacramento Arden West — with a morning shuttle to Location B at 1780 Tribute Road (Fairfield Inn), buses departing by 5:00 a.m. sharp, and an afternoon return from the finish between 11:00 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. The later departure buys you roughly 30 more minutes of sleep than downtown, at the cost of a post-race bus queue on N Street and no walk-back option if you miss it.

Folsom (near the start)

not walkable to the finish

Eight partner properties — Lake Natoma Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Larkspur Landing, Staybridge Suites, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Courtyard by Marriott, Residence Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites — with complimentary shuttle and return service. Sleep is easiest here (Location C/D buses run continuously 5:00-5:30 a.m. from 261 Iron Point Rd and 2475 Iron Point Rd, and the Lake Natoma Inn shuttle leaves at 5:30 a.m.), but Folsom start-area roads close from 2:00 a.m. and reopen at 10:00 a.m., and after the race you are dependent on a return bus to get back across the county. Choose this only if you have someone driving and meeting you downtown.

The morning connection

Treat race morning as a walking and bus problem, not a driving one. Downtown finish streets including Capitol Mall and L Street close from 4:00 a.m. and reopen only between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m., so a car parked outside the closure line is stranded from you and a car parked inside it is stranded until afternoon — park it Saturday and forget it. CIM's free buses are the only sanctioned way to the start (bib is the ticket), and there is no gear check at the start, so whatever you carry to the bus you leave behind or discard. The measured light rail platforms at 8th and Capitol and 7th and Capitol sit essentially at the finish line, which makes them useful for spectators and for Sunday afternoon, but I could not verify SacRT's Sunday first-train time and would not plan a 4:30 a.m. bus connection around them.
