The race-week geography

The mistake is booking in Big Sur because the race is called Big Sur. This is a point-to-point that finishes at Highway 1 and Rio Road in Carmel, and the race's own transportation page says free race-provided buses to the start are required for marathon, relay, 21-miler and 11-miler participants unless you are staying in Big Sur. So the default is to sleep near the FINISH in Carmel or Monterey and let the race drive you 26 miles south in the dark. Staying in Big Sur is the one exception, not the smart play: you get a lie-in, but Highway 1 is shut around you until the afternoon. The race's travel page lists three host hotels with room blocks, all in Monterey, each tied to a specific shuttle boarding point, which is the real reason to book one.

The race travel page lists three hotels with blocks: Monterey Marriott (block deadline April 1, 2027), Hilton Garden Inn Monterey (deadline March 23, 2027) and Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on the Del Monte Golf Course (deadline March 23, 2027). Each is paired with a boarding point: the Marriott feeds the Downtown Parking Garages at 340 Tyler Street, the Hilton Garden Inn feeds Monterey Peninsula College at 980 Fremont Street, which also serves all relay legs. Marathon Tours & Travel sells guaranteed-entry packages of three and four nights at the Portola Hotel & Spa, released first-come first-served from August 19. Monterey is the safe pick if you want a real town around you, but it puts you furthest from the finish line and you are dependent on the return shuttle.

This is the strongest base. The finish is at Highway 1 and Rio Road, and Carmel River Inn (2 minutes) and Carmel Mission Inn (5 minutes) sit right on that junction, so you finish, collect your bag and are effectively home without waiting for a bus. The race's travel page also lists Carmel boutique hotels and vacation rentals generally, with a shuttle pickup at Carmel Plaza, corner of Ocean Avenue and Junipero, for people staying in the village. The trade-off is race-morning traffic control: the traffic page says travellers to the Highlands may cross Rio Road until 7 a.m., after which southbound vehicles are held near The Crossroads Carmel until they can join a caravan, so plan to be on a bus long before that matters.

Big Sur Lodge about 8 min from the start

Only worth it if you actively want the 5 a.m. lie-in and accept being sealed in. Big Sur Lodge is roughly 8 minutes from the start at Big Sur Station. The race runs a dedicated service for Big Sur lodging: two race-morning shuttles doing continuous loops on Highway 1, from 4:45 to 5:45 a.m., covering about two miles in each direction from the start. Guests staying in Big Sur are the only participants exempt from the mandatory race buses. The cost is the afternoon: Highway 1 restrictions run 4 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the race explicitly discourages residents south of Bixby Bridge from travelling northbound until after 10 a.m., so getting from the finish back to a Big Sur room is a long, slow afternoon.

The morning connection

There is no public transit here in any useful sense; this is rural Highway 1 and the race bus fleet is the transit system. The single fact that governs your morning is that Highway 1 is closed to private vehicles early on race morning, with no parking and no runner drop-off at any start area, so there is literally no way to drive yourself to the start. You pick a pickup location through your haku account in March, drive or walk to that pickup point in the small hours, and board. Everything else, including how you get back, hangs off that choice.
