The race-week geography
The mistake here is treating Austin like a race where you need a hotel near the start and a plan for the finish. You don't. The start is 2nd and Congress, the finish is 9th and Congress, seven blocks apart on the same street, and every hotel already on your list sits inside that box. The real decision is not proximity but drivability: the race publishes no host hotel and no room block of its own, only a booking platform (Hotels for Hope) that sells downtown rooms and donates $2 per room night to the race's charity program. So book direct, book downtown, and spend your planning energy on the car question instead. If you are driving in Saturday, get the car into your hotel's garage Saturday afternoon and accept that it is parked until midday Sunday. The race's own guidance is that crossing the course by vehicle is extremely difficult and should be avoided, and police only wave cars across major intersections when there is a gap in runners. A downtown room converts that from a problem into a non-issue.
Congress Avenue core (JW Marriott, Austin Marriott Downtown, Hampton Inn and Suites Austin Downtown, Hyatt Place)
1-4 min to the start at 2nd and Congress
This is the block-for-block correct answer. The JW at 2nd and Congress is essentially on the start line, and the others are within a few blocks of both start and finish. At 5:45 a.m. this is quiet in a way that surprises people: the bars on 6th shut at 2, the street sweepers have been through, and you are walking a wide, well-lit avenue with the Capitol lit up at the north end and the corrals filling below you. Because you are inside the closure, you cannot drive anywhere on Sunday morning, but you also never need to. Practical consequence: gear check is on W. 7th between Congress and Colorado, which is between your hotel and the finish, so you can drop a bag on the way down and collect it on the way back without a detour.
West downtown (W Austin, and the western edge generally)
About 4 min to the start
Slightly further from the start but the smarter base if you have any reason to move the car before the marathon field has cleared. The race's own advice is to park on the west side of downtown if you plan to leave while the full marathon is still running, because the course boxes in the eastern and southern approaches for hours. Same 5:45 a.m. character as the Congress core, a little less foot traffic, and you are walking east and downhill to the corrals rather than fighting across anything.
East of I-35 near Plaza Saltillo (LINE is downtown, but this is the alternate value zone)
Roughly 15-20 min on foot to Congress and 2nd
Cheaper rooms and better coffee, and on foot you simply walk west under I-35 to Congress with no course crossing before the start. The catch is the return trip. The Red Line rail station at Plaza Saltillo is not an option on a Sunday, and after you finish at 9th and Congress you are on the wrong side of a live course for anything mechanised. If you base here, plan on walking both directions and treat the 20 minutes back as your cooldown. Nobody in this zone should be counting on a rideshare pickup before roughly midday.
Anywhere requiring a drive on Sunday morning (airport corridor, north Austin, the suburbs)
n/a
Workable but only with a hard commitment to arriving early and parking once. The race says downtown parking is plentiful and, importantly, on-street metered spots are free on Sundays, and it names State Garage A, B, F, G and N, Austin City Hall, and Texas Capitol Visitors Parking as the garages to aim for. Two cautions from the race's own guidance: those state garages may start charging by late morning if there is a Moody Center event, and you should be parked and moving 45 to 30 minutes before your wave. MoPac, Lamar and I-35 stay open north-south, so the drive in is fine; it is the last mile that fails.

The morning connection
Treat Austin as a walking race and you will be fine; treat it as a transit race and you will miss your wave. The single most important fact is that CapMetro's Red Line, whose Downtown and Plaza Saltillo stations look perfect on a map, does not run on Sundays at all. Its published schedule is Monday to Thursday 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 5 a.m. to midnight, and Saturday 10 a.m. to midnight, with no Sunday service listed. So rail is useful for getting to the expo and to dinner on Saturday evening and is worthless on race morning. That leaves feet, and feet are genuinely enough: the start is 2nd and Congress, the finish is 9th and Congress, and the entire hotel cluster sits between them. Everything else, cars and rideshares included, is fighting a closure that swallows Congress from around 11th Street down to Cesar Chavez and restricts Cesar Chavez itself through the downtown core.
Course geometry provenance is stated beside the player; elevation profiles always use the same route loaded there. City geometry is OpenStreetMap, ODbL. Aerial imagery is from USGS and USDA; other images carry their own source credits. Weather figures use Open-Meteo reanalysis for February 10-18 across 2016-2025 at the start line.
