Fly the course

The whole course, built from the best available published route trace and an extruded model of Minneapolis. Scrub it, change the camera, or let it play. Nothing here is a video: it is drawing the city live.

Route statusCurrent community course trace cross-checked against the published route. Public route 'Twin Cities Marathon' (created 2026-02-22). GET https://ridewithgps.com/routes/54052881.json loads without login: 1,181 track points, 42,657 m (26.5 mi), +179 m gain. Start 44.9744,-93.2633 (S 6th St downtown Minneapolis, matches official 615 S 6th St start), end 44.9518,-93.1049 (MN State Capitol, St. Paul). Start coords match actual 2025-10-05 race recordings (multiple RWGPS trips titled 'Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon', 42.5-42.9 km, same start point), so this is the current course.

The route line uses the best published course trace available. Public-domain USGS and USDA aerial photography plus USGS 3DEP elevation are baked into RunRace USA, so the flyover makes no paid map API or third-party runtime requests. Buildings, roads, parks and water use OpenStreetMap, ODbL. This is photographic terrain with modeled architecture, not photogrammetry. Bridge approaches, elevations and facade details are approximations; the organizer's published route remains the reference.

The climbs that shape the day

Summit Avenue

Mile 20.65 to 22.99

145 feet of modeled rise · a long, steady false-flat grind from roughly mile 20 to mile 23, never steep but continuous.

Climb 2

Mile 1.5 to 2.36

97 feet of modeled rise · 2.1% average.

Mile by mile

Every row uses the same modeled route and elevation surface as the player. Net change shows the shape of that mile; the common sparkline scale makes hard and easy sections comparable.

MileShapeModeled netWhat happens
1+6 ftIDS Center

Downtown Minneapolis on South 6th Street with the IDS Center overhead, then out onto Hennepin. The road tips up only slightly, but the corrals are still packed, so let the first mile be slower than you want.

2+58 ftBasilica of Saint Mary

Past the Basilica of Saint Mary and up through Lyndale and Douglas. This is the one real climb of the first half, 97 feet at about two percent, and the right move is to give the time back willingly rather than fight it.

3-35 ft

Douglas tops out and the course tilts down through residential streets to Oliver and Penn. Free speed, but you are three miles in and it is not yours to spend yet.

4-8 ft

The lakes begin. Dean Parkway and West Lake of the Isles Parkway are dead level, and you are now on the smooth parkway surface that carries most of the next ten miles.

50 ft

Dean Parkway hands you off to the west shore of Bde Maka Ska. Flat, curving, pleasant, which is exactly why runners drift a few seconds a mile fast here.

6+6 ft

Around the south end of Bde Maka Ska and onto William Berry Parkway. Nothing in the grade worth thinking about, so use the mile to check that your effort still feels boring.

7-2 ft

East Lake Harriet Parkway, water on one side, level ground under you. Settle in.

8-18 ft

Leaving Harriet for West Minnehaha Parkway, and the road starts giving back. The first genuinely downhill mile of the day, gentle enough to ride without wrecking your quads.

9-16 ft

The parkway bends along Minnehaha Creek and keeps drifting downhill. Long, winding, easy to run smooth.

10-7 ft

Double digits, still on Minnehaha Parkway, still flat. A good place to take stock: if this feels like work already, adjust the plan now rather than at 22.

11-9 ft

Cedar Avenue South pulls you out of the creek corridor toward Nokomis with the grade tipping slightly down.

12+1 ft

Lake Nokomis opens up on West Lake Nokomis Parkway. Flat and open, the last of the lake miles.

13+1 ft

Around the east shore of Nokomis on level pavement. Whatever pace you are holding here is the pace you are telling the second half you can hold.

14+23 ft

Halfway lands on this mile, and the road leans up for the first time since mile 2 as you turn onto 22nd Avenue South and back toward Minnehaha Parkway. Small rise, but the first one your legs will actually notice.

15-25 ft

Godfrey Parkway drops you toward Minnehaha Park and the river, the steepest sustained descent so far. Let gravity do it, do not push into it.

16-22 ft

The turn north onto West River Parkway. The Mississippi is alongside you now and stays there for four miles, and the grade quietly goes away.

17-2 ft

Straight, quiet river parkway with nothing changing. Depending on the day this is either the most restful mile of the race or the longest one.

18+9 ft

Still West River Parkway, still level. This is where the marathon actually starts, so stop admiring the river and start counting effort.

19+15 ft

Last flat mile of the day, and you should treat it that way. Get your legs and your breathing organized, because the course changes in about ten minutes.

20-33 ft

Off the west bank and over the Mississippi on the Franklin Avenue bridge, then onto East River Parkway. The mile runs downhill, which is a gift and also the last one.

21+25 ft

North Mississippi River Boulevard puts you in Saint Paul, and the Summit Avenue climb has already begun underneath this mile even though it does not look like much yet. Uphill from here to almost mile 23.

22+81 ft

Cretin Avenue turns you onto Summit, and this is where the race gets decided. It is the biggest net climb on the course and it arrives at exactly the worst moment, so shorten the stride and hold effort instead of pace.

23+58 ft

Summit keeps rising to the crest right at the end of this mile. Grind it, do not race it: the 145 feet you have climbed since mile 20 are all in your legs now.

24-30 ft

Over the top and Summit finally gives back. Ease into the descent before you open up, because these quads have been climbing for three straight miles.

25+1 ft

Flat blocks along Summit Avenue. One mile of holding form and refusing to do math.

26-51 ft

Summit ends at the Cathedral and John Ireland Boulevard drops hard toward the Capitol. It is the fastest stretch of the whole course, and it is entirely a question of what you left.
